Diff locks as standard,
unrivalled mechanical strength, such as half shafts, no weak steel here, german engineering,
stand out from the crowd

Well they were some of my reasons for getting a Mog when conptemplating my present vehicle (I also considered a L*** R****)

However, If you need a part, genuine MB parts ARE expensive, german ebay is your friend though

Do the right thing GO Ma Benz

they are a soilid bit of kit there is a bit of a down side tho the fuel consumtion it crap even the diesels (a mate use to tow one on a trailer with a v8 101 forward control because it was cheeper to run) but if your not bothered about that like donk says german enginering is a tough one to beat
and donk shame on you for thinking of the green oval Rolling Eyes

If your thinking of getting a 300GD then be prepared for a bomb proof engine that's well.. gutless. Its like a non turbo VM engine that Land rover fitted initially to the RRC before opting for the turbo version. The 300GD is crying out for a conversion to the turbo version of its engine. The 280GE on the other hand is a smaller petrol engine that produces more torque than the diesel Confused and from what I'm told the economy isn't much worse.

In the UK reliability times by repair cost and green oval takes some beating. The result is we have had to buy another G to break for parts to keep the first one going. Another problem I find is they can be absolute pains to work on, just to tighten the PAS pump took a while just to find suitable combinations of spanners and sockets to slacken the nuts Shame on you .

I run Three G wagons ,

The problem I had when I started working on them is comparing them to landrovers , "there not" they are different to work on.

you on the whole dont get the rust issues that landrovers have , rust spots are , rear quarter panels , sills, rear chassis spring mount ,
all brake , service parts are easy to get from Euro carparts .

Unlike landrover some bits you need to hunt for as the supplier isn't down the road .

The 460 series i.e . 300GE, 23OGE , 280GE, are starting to get on 1989 will be the newest you will find in the UK .
The price of the 463 Series may put you off.
The price of a 460 G in the UK isnt to bad they go for a lot more in Europe have a look on EBAY.DE Shocked .

Its a horses for courses thing really .

best bet look at loads and get a feel for them .

People say LR's are expensive to run - I've spoken to someone that has run a few G's. The average diesel he owned was 17mpg, and the V8 petrol returned an abysmal 5-6mpg!!!

I loved my Merc.

However I did not like doing any work in the engine bay.

It was very tight!

150bhp from the 2.8 straight 6 DOHC fuel injected petrol.

Automatic gearbox was a dream

difflocks were awesome

fuel consumption could be gotten upto 11mpg by driving everywhere at 50mph.

LPG kit was fitted.

Returned 10mpg even when towing.

Cheaper on gas than my Diesel fourtrak is on diesel...

Only just tho.

Great truck, huge, heavy and slow.

You realise how heavy they are when you become bogged, however they are fantastic when it comes to recovering stuck trucks, no winches needed!

well I had a 230 auto for 5 years, got between 15 and 17 , lpg'd it and returned 11 mpg (equivalent to 22mpg). Have a 280 auto that does around 15mpg and now have a 560 V8 thats returns 9-12MPG. so where your mate got 5-6 mpg god only knows.

V8 below
