At the end of a days off roading last weekend (Nothing too damaging), I had a bit of trouble getting it into 1st and 2nd gear. (Thought nothing of it)

The following day, horrible gear crunching noises (as though you miss-timed a gear change) when changing from 1st to 2nd. Sad

Changing down is not a problem, but changing up into 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd is hard. I have to wait a few seconds before I engage the next gear, otherwise the gears crunch.

Additionally, when in first gear, if I decelerate, a horrible gear rattling noise occurs. This happens whether the clutch is engaged or depressed.

If I take it out for a longer run most of the noises and problems seem to disappear - only to reoccur the next time I go for a drive.

Any ideas what this might be, and how and where I could get it fixed (I live on the south coast near Southampton)

Check the gearbox oil for level and colour, if you undo the plug and the magnet is covered in iron filings, and the oil looks very silvery then it don't sound good. Have you been sitting around in water, muddy or otherwise, it could be water contamination.

Mark at MDG will have a look for you.

The Grinding Noise got Worse, and I lost 2nd and 4th gear!

I contacted Andy Whitehead (of Whitehead Engineering- jeep specialist and enthusiast - near Oxford). He said he would take a look at it.

He ripped out the gearbox to find knackered syncro's and a missing 3 inch bearing. The bearing had been missing for about 50,000 miles after a Jeep main dealer had rebuilt my engine (I'd spent too much time under water).

Andy ordered 3 new bearings and all the syncro's from lighthouse jeep and rebuilt the gearbox. The gearbox is now silent and I have found my long lost gears.

P.S I would thoroughly recommend Andy for any gearbox, lift of axle work. He also has a load of pics of the Rubicon trail - he shipped his jeep over there to do it !!
