Hello,

I've been thinking again, dangerous I know, storage boxes/containers? I want to do some some travelling in my series 111 lwb, and without fixing anything permantly. I need boxes/containers to store all the equipment/parts/tools in etc.

I've looked at a number of sites for boxes/containers, does anyone know of any, that would be suitable?

Thanks for any help,
Best regards,
Mark

Hi,,, Have a look at mobile storage systems at this address http://www.mobilestoragesystems.fsnet.co.uk/
not sure if this is what you have in mind but its very strong and well crafted kit

another, (far) cheaper alternative is banana boxes, as reccommended by Tom Shepperd himself, they're strong, stack, and above all free Smile

Hello,

Both brilliant ideas, already emailed the site for the mobile storage systems. Like the banana boxes, simplicity.

Many thanks to you both,
Best regards,
Mark

The Mobilestoragesystems stuff is expensive, but I'm sure it's very good, just a bit OTT maybe, for most?

I found that two red, plastic crates (like you buy at supermarkets and DIY stores) stacked on top of each other is just shy of the height of the shoulders / behind seats bulkhead in a 110. As is my fridge. The width seemed to be just right as well with two fitting side by side between the wheel arches.

I used a few of those crates last year for my summer hols and was still able to fabricate a bed for on top of that. Worked very well.

I always like things that have a dual purpose. So a storage box should also be able to double up as a seat or a box to stand on or a temporary water container (watertight)

Not many of the cheap-as-chips boxes would stand up to much sitting on.

The other point to note is UVA/UVB resistance. The B&Q boxes will quickly deteriorate if left in sunlight in the Sahara and become very brittle.

Lots of good points there, Simon. Is there anything similar you would recommend?

I'm about to start preparing the back of Rachel for this Summer's jaunt. I really want to get the bed platform lower, though.

these type of boxes are pretty good:

They come in all shapes and sizes with integral lids. They are heavy duty and stand up to some hard use. I'm not sure if they come flat enough to stay below the wheel arches in the back of a Defender (approx 9 inches?) but I've certainly seen them under 12 inches high.

Have a look on EBAY

That's the sort we used for our trip down Africa, they survived a year bouncing around the back of the truck in 2003/4 and are ALL still in one piece ready for another trip Smile I've been trying to remember where we bought them from, it was somewhere on the internet, think they were about a tenner each.

Hello,

Thank you all very much for your ideas, excellent stuff!

Having been pointed in the right direction, and taking all your views onboard, and after a number of hours playing about, manage to find these;

www.solentplastics.co.uk

only about 7mls from where I live! Typical!

Many thanks again, to your all,
Best regards,
Mark

Mark,
If you packing boxes in the back, without fastening them down then you should consider a load guard - i.e. a physical barrier between you and the load - a bit like a dog guard, only stronger!

This may sound over the top... but trust me, when youv'e had 2ft long 1" diameter road forming spikes (stored in the boot of a hatchback) fly inches past your head and land 50yds down the road in a road accident, you look at the unlikely in a different light!!!

As others have said, the mobile storage systems stuff is second to none... and bolts to the floor!

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the info, and comments. Yes, they will be secured, won't be using a dog guard though, I've plans for a makeshift internal bunk. Very Happy

Best regards,
Mark

The boxes I mentioned earlier are used by lots of different shops to store and transport stock. I know NEXT and WH Smith use them. So if you know anyone who works there you could ask to 'ahem' borrow a couple to see if they suit your purposes.

re the boxes used by next etc, we use them for camping and have 8 that stack in out trailer

very convenient due to shape ect, and stacking ability BUT the lid is not waterproof as it joins in the middle

NHS supplies use a similar but slightly longer box (some with seperate lid) but in my hopsital it is a disciplinary offence to remove them from the hospital site - too many gone walk about for house moves etc.

Wolff boxes are very good. Apart from the clips. Not cheap in the UK though. Three go nicely across the Defender on top of the Mobile Storage Systems draw and three high.

STRAP EVERYTHINBG DOWN. Get a LOAD guard. Not a dog guard. That keeps you safer
