Hi all, long time since I’ve posted
Mk1 vitara 1.6 8v SWB soft top Sport ‘94, owned since ‘97, for the last 15 years a greenlaner only, 1000 miles pa, 80k on the clock
In recent years clutch and rear prop UJs replaced, and a used F axle fitted due to pinion failure of the original. 2” susp and body lifts ( rocky road kit )
Recently in heard grinding from the front. 31” MTs fitted
Checked fwh’s ( superwinch) and OS was dry and rusty, so greased and refitted.
In 4wd with both hubs engaged I get the noise when coasting
In 2wd with hubs disengaged no noise
In 2wd with hubs engaged I get noise
In 2wd with NS engaged and OS disengaged no noise
In 2wd with OS engaged and NS disengaged I get noise
No clicking on turning to suggest a cv gone
Any thoughts please? Wheel bearing ?

maybe it is grit in the outer hub where the cv joint goes into the hub or the cv cover rubbing

Ok, thanks for the earlier replies, Vit has been awaiting MoT and required steering ball joint, trailing arm bushes, and a replacement CV boot, just 13 mths old, which had gone brittle as was a warrant replacement. They could see nothing obviously wrong.
I’ve been road testing in in 2wd on smooth A roads ( and where the FWHs removed and replaced with the factory Fixed hubs, so F diff being driven ) and noise didn’t recur.
Went Laning yesterday and the noise is back, before I started the first lane, ie still in 2WD. Seems to occur going down a less smooth road / B road, starts when going down hill, doesn’t stop unless I stop, steering and braking make no difference, nor coasting with clutch in or out.
A rotational “sqwaaaaaalll” noise ?
My 4x4 mech is back from his travels, so will be visiting him soon, but any thoughts ?
