I've just bought a D4 which I want to put All terrain tyres on, preferably BFG.
It is fitted with 20" wheels with 255/50R20 tyres.
Am I correct to assume that if I change wheels the options would be 255/60R18 or 255/55R19?

You will struggle to get anything BFG in the sizes that you have, Can you change the wheels?, some/all that are fitted with Brembo brakes on the front means you have to stick with 20 inch wheels, due to the size of the calipers.
But all is not lost you could fit 275/45R20 Grabber AT3. If you can go down to 19 inch Goodyear list both the Duratrac and Wrangler Adventurer in 255/55R19, the difference between the Duratrac and the Adventurer, which are the same pattern but the Adventurer comes in H speed rating against the Q of the Duratrac. In 18 inch you could go for the Maxxis AT 771 Bravo in 255/60R18.
As a thought you can get an 18 inch rim (8x18) made by Compomotive that clears the calipers, designed for and used a lot in Oz for D4/RRS there they are between A$ 550-600 each and you will need 5 of them, whether Compomotive UK could help you or not not sure as most if not all people i know are Oz based who use them.

I can source 285/55 R20 in a KO2. Would they fit a Landmark 20" rim and, if so, what effec twould they have on gearing clearance etc?

A lot bigger, maybe too big.
?
What are you going to be using the D4 for, is it going offroad?
Recently i got a Shogun and was going to fit BFG's as i have usually had them on my Defenders or Jimny's, A/TKO2's & KM2's but then thought about it and as i am doing more road and just some forest tracks so fitted Michelin CrossClimate SUV's.
I went from the 285/55 R18's that were on to 265/60 R18's.
Pleased that i have as its feeling nice and sure footed on the motorway and on wet roads and i am getting a few more MPG.
Had them in mud last week and they did good.

The D4 will be used for rally recovery so fast tarmac and gravel but will also need to go off-piste on forest stages. Will also be used for a bit of light off-roading/green laning and 4X4 Response duties so snow will have to be considered too!
The BFG has done well for all these on the Defender hence wanting to stay with what i know - but open to suggestions.

Ian, i will list the tech stuff for the stock fitment ,the size you want, and one i suggest but the choice is yours.
Stock 255/50R20 Diameter 30 inches
Sectional width 10 inches
Circumference 94.3 inches
Sidewall height 5 inches
Revs per mile 672
Your size
285/55R20 Dia. 32.3
SW 11.2
Cir 101.6
Si He 6.7
Revs 643
255/55R20
Dia 31
SW 10
Cir 97.5
Si He 5.5
Revs 650
I do know that 285/55R20 catch the plastic shields under the D4, due to their extra diameter and width, they will go 8-10 inch wide rims, the sidewall will give you a better ride on tar, and give you more tyre v rim protection in the forest. It's a size they cannot use in most states in Oz due to stringent oe fitment v oversize fitments regs, most use either stock or 275/45 tyres like Grabber AT3 or Nitto Grapplers.

Don't know how much they are in Oz but £300 a pop here! Add a 256/60/18 BFG all terrain at £130 each it's not cheap!

Last time i looked they were A$598 each, as you say add the tyre you are looking at A$770-780 each corner, no wonder Nitto Grappler and others is so popular in Oz in,275/40R20 and 275/45R20.
