I have been searching for a small 4x4 recently and have pretty much given up on the jimny. Any I've viewed were basically rust buckets and drove terribly with unpredictable steering and the dreaded jimny wobble. Im not looking for something for serious offroading where the jimny excels but more for mountain tracks and snowy conditions.

So Ive been looking at the Rav4 and vitara if which there are many more available than the jimny. Id be definitely putting on some all terrain tyres and maybe a 2" lift. I know the vitara has the 4WD-L option, not sure of the rav4? Is it really necessary? Of the two, which would be more reliable and capable on more challenging lanes? Im looking at 2002-2006.

Hi, go for the RAV if not going serious off road. Perfectly capable on gravel tracks etc, and is full time 4wd so better in winter. Vit is only 2wd normally, but does have the low range should you require. RAV is always a reliable choice. (I have a Jimny, but would not cope if it was my only car!)
