Hi All

Looking for a little advice. I have just sold my L200 Black Barbarian 2013. It has been fine aside from the head blowing once and Mitsubishi replaced the engine.

I have been looking at a Ranger but supplied with the off-road pack it only locks up the rear axles. I do a lot of difficult off-roading and even the L200's fully locking front and back still would get stuck a few times.

So I have been pushed away from the Ranger and took a Hi-Lux out for a test drive today. It was fine but down on power at 150ps (L200 was 176ps) and the Navara (I have not test drove yet) is 200ps and so is the Ranger.

The Hi-Lux has diff lock on all wheels and I am unsure about the Navara maybe someone here will know.

So unless I have missed something Toyota seems to be the winner at the moment, what do you guys think? I can get a discount of around 5k off a new vehicle so a new one is a no brainer.

I've not heard of the Toyota having front and rear difflocks, I've not heard of many makes factory supply a front, think you'd be better getting the truck you want then fit aftermarket. They couldn't get a Toyota when I was buying so never got to drive it but I can't stand things like the huge ipad on the dash, a silly thing but it annoyed me. Apart from being underpowered it seems to have a good reputation.

Nissan do front and rear diff locks but only on the AT32 I believe, it'd be cheaper to put an aftermarket one in unless you want the AT32. When I test drove the Nissan I took it back after the first roundabout. It's the worst thing I've driven in years. But others seem to really like them so I would recommend driving one yourself.. and researching parts availability gripes on the facebook pages.

I currently have the amarok, it's very comfortable and I have a rear locking diff. It's one of the few that's permanent 4wd if you get the auto but you lose the lowbox on the auto. They lowered the gearing in the 8 speed auto instead. It's torque limited in reverse and lower ground clearance than the other pickups. Add that to the price and I wouldn't pick it if it's going to get abused offroad.

The Ford is a good all rounder, comfortable onroad and reasonably priced. Don't think you'll get the difflocks though without looking at aftermarket stuff.

I was very impressed with the Fiat, an L200 but slightly different specs and without that awful chrome grill. I think they offer a rear difflock.

The Isuzu is a good workhorse and you can get aftermarket locking diffs. Even the AT35 doesn't have one which I find odd. They also are usually quite accepting of modifications when it comes to warranty claims too.
