Hi everyone, about a year ago I bought a year 2000 Jimny as a farm vehicle for our smallholding. It wasn’t pretty when I bought it, but it didn’t need to be as it wasn’t going on the road again.
It only came with one key and I snapped it in the door lock. As I didn’t need to lock it or anything I decided I’d just Hotwire the ignition - I’d ran an old Scirocco like this for 18 months. What didn’t occur to me as I set about unceremoniously releasing the steering lock and gaining access to the necessary wires was the immobiliser. Doh!
I broke the little plastic ring that I now know houses the receiver for the key chip. I’ve tried twisting the two minute wires of that ring together and taping my key fob to them but no joy.
So, anyone know of either a way to bypass the immobiliser or what it is that the immobiliser inhibits and I’ll, very agriculturally, hard wire them with switches where required.
Any help grearfully received.
Many thanks
Ady

Hi,

I lost the key to my 1990 Jimny. No buttons on the key, so I assumed it was LO-tech. Wrong ... the key has to be IN (or close?) to the car.

1.). Main dealers can supply a new key blank from the chassis number, and tell you the pattern to have it cut to fit your car. Think £50-ish.

2). Nobody wants to cut your key. One firm quoted me £99 to cut my key. I have since found a firm on Ebay who will do it a lot cheaper. Eventually, I asked my local main dealer to ask their "man" to cut my key. Think £20.

3) Car started first touch, sounded beautiful for about a couple of seconds, then died. I'm guessing that it was running on the fuel already in the pipes. I suspect that the immobilizer killls the electric fuel pump?

4). Main dealers we prepared to come visit my home, to introduce the car to it's new key. Nobody mentioned how much that would cost. ???

5). In the event, I phoned my Recovery firm (luckily I had Home-Start) and had the car recovered four miles to the main dealer for FREE.

Years ago, I suggested to Mrs 602 (my financial advisor), that we should have Home-Start. "We don't need it!", she declared. Several weeks into this adventure, I asked her to phone Recovery, ask how much they would charge for retrospective Home-Start. "We already have Home Start!" she told me. "Doh! When did that happen?". She phoned the yellow taxi, and a huge recovery truck arrived outside our house ... somehow, my previous 4x4 had been mentioned, a 1959 LR 109"

6). The dealers performed the nuptials, car started, they charged me about £20. No doubt it would have cost more for them to visit my house

All in all, it cost me about £100, and due to my ignorance, it all took several weeks. It should be quicker and cheaper next time.

If you still have the blunt end of a broken key, don't lose it, keep it on your key-ring, or hide it in the car, save yourself a few quid.

602 (Now less ignorant than he was)
