Hi folks, first post here. I'm looking to pick up a cheap 4x4 for weekend use in hilly, muddy terrain. Something around 2000-2005, reliable and decent off road.

I was thinking of a discovery 3 but gather they are not very reliable at all? Maybe a pajero/shogun or landcruiser? I'd prefer the SWB if going for the pajero/landcruiser. Not too many available here in Dublin, only very high mileage, heavily worked machines. Anything else I could be looking at?

Discovery 3s are fine if they've been maintained. The diffs can have problems if they haven't had oil changes and there is a pump belt on the back of the engine which is supposed to be a body off job to change. Also if there are leaks on the air suspension the pump over works and fails but people just change the pump but don't fix the leaks.

Depends what you want it for and what you consider cheap but;

Suzuki Jimny, cheap to run and great offroad.
Discovery 2 just watch out for them going rusty underneath
P38 range rover just make sure all the electrics work.
4x4 pickups are fine if you just want to do muddy tracks and fields etc, the bodies can be a bit long if your really going for it

Not sure what else to suggest really.
