Hi I'm Chris. I'm looking to buy my first 4WD and was after some advice on what vehicle to choose and things to consider.
It will primarily be used to get me to work each day so it needs to be able to get me there reliably, so something relatively new, 06 onwards. I would like to do some weekend greenlaning and the occasional trip within the UK. Nothing too extreme though.
I like pickup trucks, I just think they look cool and have maybe £7k-£8k maximum to spend.
So far my thoughts are a Navara or L200 and a deisel auto. Maybe a Shogun. Although a Hilux or D-Max would be great, I don't think I could afford one.
Any advice/tips appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Navara have s reputation for the chassis going rotten behind the cab so have a good look underneath. They go from the inside of the chassis out so it's not immediately obvious. Any signs and walk away. Some had a habit of throwing the con rod out the side of the block too. We had a 56 plate at work and although it was better on the motorway than my at the time ranger I didn't like it. It felt very delicate so I'm not a fan.

The l200 is good as it's narrow so it'll go down lanes. Try and get one with a superselect gearbox as this allows you to run in 4wd on road which is nice for winter. The only other one I know of is the amarok with the permanent 4motion but they hold their money well. The can't tow as much as the competition but that might not be important.

I had a 60 plate rodeo and the build quality was far superior to the Mitsubishi. They are more agricultural though and can't be run in 4wd on road. So e people hack the 4wd wiring to give 2wd low which is good for trailer manouvering.

Welcome.
Do you need something big for your daily drive, and a diesel that is not that economic?
The issue with buying a Euro 5 or Euro 4 Pickup or 4x4 will be Low Emission Zones as they are introduced in Cities and Towns around the UK, the rising fuel prices and the poor economy of many Diesel Pickups.

Could you not look at a Euro 5 Petrol 4x4. Not that there are that many to choose from, the Jimny being quite small and not that economic but perfect for Greenlaning with 1 or 2 passengers.

A Jeep Renegade might be suitable but maybe not yet in your budget.
They work for daily drives and for Softroading and Greenlaning though.

All the best looking and trying cars / pickuos, and maybe look along to yout local Offroad Club and see what people have.
