Hi,

I have a 1959 Land Rover 109" Series 2. It is unlikely to ever go off-road again. It is currently fitted with D110 wheels, with Avon Rangemaster 750R16, 6PR. I suspect these tyres are getting old. Two have about 10mm of tread, three have about 4mm of tread. There is no sign of cracking. They are inflated to 26ps1.

Question. Do old tyres become harsh? The truck rides OK over pot-holes, but is uncomfortable on any but the smoothest of tarmac. I am aware of thick shadows, and can hear the engine responding to my knee/foot bouncing up and down. This can't be good for my fuel consumption. Steering is heavy, but I suppose that's normal for a truck like this.

Question. What should be my target price for budget tyres to fit (I'm 78 year old pensioner, so please be gentle). I am able to fit tyres myself, but would rather not.

I've found mail-order Rangemasters at £120 inc VAT and delivery. Also found an obscure brand at £90.

602

Something around the money you are quoting are going to be in the ball park for 7.50R16.If those Avons have been not stored properly then expect them to behave as they are now, as rubber hardens with age.

mytyres.co.uk list 7.50R16 Event ML698 (a BFT AT copy almost) at £89.10 including VAT and delivery, then you have to budget to fit them.
