|

|
Morning,
Replacing the ball joint on defender drop arm. Ball joint all came apart ok just need to pull out the top Cup. Question is how much play should there be between the bottom cup and the bore in the drop arm: it just fell out. I've got nothing to compare with yet and worried the bore in the arm might be worn. As it sprung loaded, can't get my head around if it matters anyway. Bore is measuring about 28.6 ish (as best I can measure) and bottom cup is like a barrel measuring 28.00 at the ends and 28.1 in the middle.
Really hoping not to change the arm so any advice greatly received
Many thanks in advance, martin

The workshop manual quotes a repair kit available which includes both top and bottom sockets - but there is no mention of the dimensions of the arm. The WM goes on to say that the lower socket should be pressed into position suggesting that it should not be a loose fit.
If you are at all concerned the wise move, especially with steering, is to change the arm.

Many thanks for the reply. Must admit to not having looked at the manual!!!
If the bottom cup is press fit then defiantly needs changing but surely if pressfit then the spring is redundant and not like Landrover to put 'extra bits' in
Cheers.

If in doubt and all else fails then read the manual!!
I cannot tell you what was in the designers mind when this component was born but it does suggest that the spring is designed to retain the circlip and washer
