Ha Ha - she's still undergoing sea trials and First of Class flying trials will take place later. Got to test that the systems work first before dropping a plane onto her. Even car manufacturers take a couple of years to develop and test a new model - and this beast is a bit bigger and more complex than a car.

err, we still wont have STOL capable planes then either.
the (its not a) lightning II has that many variants that they cant fix them and we "sold" all our harriers to the petrols so that we could use the (its still not a) lightning II......
who got the brown envelope full of cash there then?

All the maritime variants are still in the US undergoing flying trials and pilot (UK & US) training, and yes there are the odd technical difficulties. We own 11 of the ones built so far, 18 by the end of the year and the full compliment of 36 soon after that. QEC will head over to the States to do fixed wing fly trails/training later in the year.
Or so said Phil Jones (Johnny's boss) when I asked him

and for the few technical problems, read this artical that tries to gloss over them.....
especially the bit where the LIGHTNING II is prone to lightning strikes if it flies twice in 12 hrs.....

24 on a carrier, surge up to 36 depending on flight deck mix of RW/FW. The remainder for training/maintenance and PoW when she comes along. Lead carrier (QEC or PoW depending as they rotate through the operational/maintenance cycle) will be scaled for 24 (36) with the remainder in reserve. Support shipping is configured for this (Tide and FSS).
(I was teaching this last year in the warfare school ~ and as we all know, teacher is always right )

those who can, do...
those who cant.......

baboomb! And I can't trump your Mike because my Bush/Obama/Gordon Broon toptrump cards are now out of date but I could play a Katherine Jenkins with a couple current 2* civil servants for a full house...
To be honest, the beauty of the MWC is that it provides a environment where people can learn ways to think, plan & solve problems within the bounds of the current possible as well wargaming the extreme what-ifs before they go and do it for real, lead by those who have done it for real (getting it very right or wrong in the process). Just teaching a proscribed set of points/'facts' to pass an exam is not enough. The idea is that there is no right answer (although there are plenty of wrong ones) but more let's see what we came come up with and why.
However, as we were saying:
A single QEC Class platform was never going to have 60 aircraft on deck (and I don't know where that came from) - the maximum was ever only 36 with 24 decided on as normal compliment to allow flexibility between a mixed bag of fixed wing and rotary wing assets.
I sense another good conversation coming on in Sep in Stratford at the AO!
