Hi,

Im form Netherland and I thought I open a thread for my problem.
I have a Nissan Navara D40 with the YD25 engine and it looks like my engine just got blown. It has 114K km on the clock and year 2012.
Does anyone else had this problem. Im kind of shocked as I thought these Navaras are well made. It is very disappointing.
I had some rattling noise coming at start up but I didn't expect that the timing chain is going to snap just after 110K km.

My Navara has been towed to my mechanic and today or tomorrow I'll know more but my mechanic warned me that the timing chain has most likely snapped. How often snaps the timing chain in these Navara YD25 engines?

The Navara has a reputation for the con rods coming out of the side of the block and the chassis snapping behind the cab. Otherwise they're actually not a bad truck.

I've not heard of them being prone to timing chain problems myself, usually if they go it's lack of oil or a tensioner or something. If you replace it check everything it goes around is free running with no play and the chain is being lubricated.

Thanks for reply. Since I opened this thread I did my research and I've been shocked what I found. There are plenty of topics talk about snapped and streched timing chains so yes... Navara D40 YD25 timing chain is prone to snap. Owners say their timing chain snapped at 40-60K miles but some say his lasted 19 miles before it snapped. Litearally he bought the brand new Navara and after 19 miles the lower timing chain snapped. Crazy...
Im suprised how mine lasted 114K km (70K miles).

There are blogs and forums mention this weak YD25 lower chain issue.
The tensioner wears prematurely allowing the chain to stretch.

Nissan also fitted a simplex (simple row) chain in the bottom end of the timing and they appear to be too weak.
The old D22 Navara had the duplex chain. Companies offer duplex timing chain conversion for these Navara D40. What it basically does is that they can upgrade the lower simplex chain to a stronger D22 duplex chain. It doubles the lifetime of the timing chain.

One company offers this: https://shop.zedperformance.co.uk/nissan-navara-...-timing-chain-kit

They sell this duplex chain upgrade to all D40 YD25 engines and this is where I ordered yesterday.
I've seen something similar on Ebay but they all offer some vacuum pump modification with their timing chain kit. It requires to remove the vacuum pump and all sort of stuff. I said what???
We have to put this engine together and not stripping it down even more so we just skipped the usual Ebay junk. Smile
I just don't know what comes next... a snapped chassis? I no longer think this Navara was a good choice.

I would keep an eye out for any rust of the chassis. They seem to go from the inside out so I would think it's hard to see.

I'm afraid I lost faith in Nissan when they forged a link with Renault. My dad and his neighbour both bought X-trails as Nissan advertised them in the caravan magazines as the best car to tow a caravan. They both had serious problems, his neighbour had to have a new engine at 3 years old and my dad had to have high pressure fuel pumps, turbos, EGRs etc etc. Nissans refused to help and stated they shouldn't be using them for caravan towing?!?!

I have a lot of time for Isuzu if your looking for a workhorse although I've just swapped to a VW as it's more comfortable, I doubt it will be as robust as the Isuzu was though...
