Hello. Hope this is the right section of the forum for this.
Looking to buy a new toy to throw about a little on a friends farm and a few green lanes, potentially progress to tougher stuff if i get hooked.
Its will only really be for the weekends off road but is required to temporaraly stand in as a daily driver should my 96 rover mini break down.
Dont see myself towing.
Budget isnt huge. About 1k-2k. Might push to 3 if i can find something more than capable being stock(bar tyres).
Have my eye on Shoguns. Like the reliability, look good offroad. Also looked at Jeep Cherokees xj but mainly wj grand cherokees.
I like the plush interiors and it being a bit more 'modern'. Unsure of how these fair offroad though.
Shyed away from a disco as i want something reliable to counteract my mini.
My 3 questions are:
-Which of these 3 would you recommend?
-Anything else i have missed?
-Looking at the smaller diesels of the above cars to try bring mpg up. May use for motorway driving as mini barely does 70. Are those engines still capable offroad?
Thanks for your help!
Will.

For just playing I would go Jimny. Not fast but simple, light, reliable and fun.
Big and heavy is good for towing, carrying etc but makes it harder to work on as stuff is heavier and the more 'comfort' a vehicle has the more stuff there is in the way, it's more likely to get stuck in bogs or over crests etc which means big money on big tyres, lifts etc which create their own problems. The only real advantage offroad to bigger vehicles is more power and better balance for hills.
Plus your budget would see you get a better condition jimny that discovery or land cruiser.

Or as a compromise between big heavy diesel (Shogun) and small light petrol (Jimney), what about a Daihatsu Fourtrak? Small truck, big diesel engine...
Even though its parked up in the garden not doing much atm I still love mine
