I bought a cheap Bluetooth OBD2 reader for my 2005 Defender td5 - but it doesn't work: my phone doesn't see it, and the Bluetooth light on the unit doesn't illuminate, except for a split second when I plug it in. It's the same with my 2011 Kangoo 1.5 dci (110).
I think it has to do with the fact those cheap units draw power from the car's OBD2 socket - which I think with my cars isn't happening.
I always thought all OBD2 ports were the same, but it doesn't look like it. I admit I actually know very little about it...
Is there anything that will work with my td5?
(I tried the USB version - no luck either)

I have a cheap one too, its worked with everything I've tried so far apart from Citroen. My understanding is Land Rover didn't fall in line with the standard ODB setup and had their own system for many years which I believe they used to get into trouble for?
It's my understanding that you have to buy a unit dedicated to Land Rover, although I'm not sure what years that applies to... maybe yours is new enough? so really I'm not that helpful
The cheap ones like I have only do the engine side too, if you want to communicate with anything else you need one of the better ones. Nanocom? springs to mind? Then again are there any other systems on a defender? ABS or traction control maybe?

For a TD5 you are better off with a Nanocom, Lynx type unit. OBD2 not work with TD5 (certainly not early ones)

All OBD2 connections are the same.
What differs is what each pin does. This will vary between manufactures and models in their line up.
The only pins which 'should' remain the same are power and earth.
I tried an old Snap-on kit on my Disco 2 when losing power.
Code reader came back with A/C fault ?
I was actually quite pleased. I did not know I had A/C
O No. Don't !
To test OBD either find wiring diagram or Very Carefully go along each pin with a multi meter and check for supply& ground. Usually safer to use long pin and go in from back if it accessible.
