Had a bulb go in one of the speedo backlights and to cut a long story short I think I need to open up the speedo gauge. Searching around on here brings up loads of speedo related hits but can't seem to find anything on how to disassemble the speedo. Is it possible? If so tips and gotchas to watch out for would be welcome
Cheers ian

You should not need to open the speedo to change the lights they should just pull out of the back plate.
However if you really do need to dismantle the speedo (and assuming it is a Smiths instrument) you have to go in through the front.
After taking it out of the dash the bezel (the chrome or black ring) has to be removed by turning against the body - to line up the lugs with the slots.
Then the glass comes out and then you have to pull the pointer off the spindle, sometimes it will need a very small puller.
The dial then is attached with two small screws. If you then turn the case over the are two screws holding the recorder mechanism into the case- remove these and that is about as far as you can SPAM you only want the mechanism out you do not need to remove the pointer- it will all come as one piece.

Bulbs fit into rubber type sockets that push fit into the back of the speedo, it's just a case of taking various panels around the dash to get to the speedo. It's is held in by a bracket by two knurled nuts,

Thanks for the replies. I've got a black bezel and I don't need to separate the mechanism just get the metal back off so I can try and retrieve the green bulb filter that's rattling around in there.
The long story...
Agree changing a bulb shouldn't normally need all this faff (changed them before when they've just blown and it's been just as people have said) but this time bulb has somehow fused and got stuck to inside of the light guide tube/green filter and when I removed the bulb holder from the tube the bulb stayed stuck in the tube. More fettling and I'd snapped the bulb with front half staying 'stuck' to the green filter. I then tried unscrewing the black light guide tube but the heat had made the plastic melt/go brittle and it also snapped. This has left me with a black tube and a speedo with a green light filter (plus front half of a bulb stuck inside) rattling around inside it.
stc3313 looked like it might've been the replacement part I need but I think it's obsolete(rimmer bros couldn't get hold of it anymore). Therefore opening up the speedo and seeing what I can do with this wreckage and some araldite seems like the way to go.
Seems like originally the black tube and green plastic filter (filter as in to make the light from the bulb go green) would've been screwed together with the metal speedo cover in between before assembling the speedo.
Cheers ian

Best answer there would be to change it all for a green led...
