Hi all... i'm a newbie and know naff all about 4x4's.

I have an Nissan Homy e24 (in fact I have 3 but that's another story). These are basically Terrano's with a Dayvan type body and are auto transmission. They have a dash switch to switch from 2wd to 4wd. I bought this as a “spares/repair” as it was stuck in 4wd.

So, the problems:

the dash switch seems faulty anyway – multimeter shows only the 4wd toggle works, 2wd doesn't. I've tried to “cheat” by wiring the switch the other way around, to no effect. Not sure what the switch powers? I'm assuming a solenoid or vacuum mechanism?

the front (4W) drive is stuck on...will not disengage at all. Jacked up one wheels spins up – as it should I think. I think its had a good few tarmac miles in this condition Sad

How might I disengage drive to the front – to return to 2wd? (I have no real need for 4wd – wash my mouth out!). One thought I had was to remove the front prop completely? (I had to do this on another one of the buses as the UJ was worn and vibrating very badly). If I could get the 4wd engaging and disengaging properly, without too much expense, i'd prefer to do this.

The rear LSD also seems to be locked up (like its welded lol). I've read this may be helped by a couple of diff oil changes?

Finally, for my trouble … seems to be a lot of in and out play on the rear drive shafts.

Despite these problems the van is otherwise really nice and fairly low miles for a '93

My main worry is if I continue to run it in this condition, will it create any catastrophic failure? I've avoided driving it for now. Sad be glad for your help

When you say the LSD is locked up - how do you mean?

Not sure on the Teranno but usually electric 4x4 buttons operate a vacuum solenoid which operates a cylinder piston that pushes the gears from 2wd to 4wd check the hoses for cracks

without a electrical diagram can't help with your switch question though

Thank you. The diff behaves like it's a welded diff, both wheels turn at same speed so the tyres skip/scrub on tightish corners.

I'll try to look for vac hoses but tbh ...don't really what i'm looking at or where.

My thought is just to remove the front prop thus disabling the drive to the front wheels.

Not sure if i just keep running the diff "as is", whether any major fail will occur?

If you jack up the back axle and turn one wheel the other wheel will always turn in the same direction and the same speed with a LSD.

If you have one wheel off the ground spinning, the LSD will attempt to brake that wheel while diverting power to the wheel on the ground

Regarding the vacuum hoses just trace them from the vicinity of the brake boost reservoir - there will be a tee somewhere down to 5mm tubing - always best to fix as escaping vacuum could affect your braking
