Have installed a terrano engine into a d22 recently. It won't start when cold unless someone pumps the priming pump when turning it over, after that it is fine for the rest of the day. It is also hesitating revving the engine up and smoking, but if I have someone pump the priming pump when revving it its fine and doesn't smoke either. I'm stuck on what this is, I'm unsure if it needs new filters or if the priming pump is possible leaking. Any help is appreciated.

what fuel pump do you have fitted - mechanical or electronic?
From what you describe you have a fueling problem

It's a mechanical pump that's fitted

Check all your fuel lines for leaks - these very often show as rust patches on the line the patches are porous letting air in but not letting fuel out
At the end of the day it's probably best to renew all your fuel lines

Have you fished out the tiny gauze filter from either in or below the banjo fitting on the inlet fuel line of the inj pump? If it's in the actual hole in the pump that the banjo bolt screws into,it'll need fished out with a bit of wire with a hook on the end.

Yes I did this yesterday and also changed the fuel filter. It's now revving up fine as both were clogged, but it's still struggling to start when cold without pumping the primer.

Assuming it is the same pump as mine, have you connected the cold start advance solenoid. Two wires either above or below (can't remember without going to look)the stop solenoid on the back of the pump.I wired mine through the glow plug relay.

I have managed to sort it now, it was a combination of the filters and glow plugs. Running sweet now. Thanks for the ideas anyway.
