Well - back home safely and pizza dough proving after a 500+ mile round trip to Manchester airport to collect eldest from her American adventure.

However...make sitting in the middle lane of a motorway at 60mph (esp you lot (amongst the many other offenders) in your speed limited vans and, oh yes, I have your companies' numbers) a capital offence or change the law so undertaking is allowed.

Come across it all the time. Used to do over 50k a year up and down the M1, I just go on the inside now.

If someone in front of you in the middle lane is tootling along at 60 why not over take in the outside lane? Or are you one of those drivers that are scared of using it, beleiving the myth that it's only to be used by BMW and Audi drivers?

Nope.

But why should I have to when they are in the wrong and it's causing the whole traffic flow to slowdown? Very inconsiderate.

But by staying in the middle lane at 60 mph when you can overtake in the outside lane you are no better than the driver in front of you!

Annoys the heck out of me along with many other things that drivers do due to a complete lack of awareness of anything beyond the ipod controls. I used to love driving at times completing 1000 mile trips in a day but now I dread the idea of travelling and often pick a route based on what I think will be quietest rather than what's quickest just to try avoid the idiots.

How do you teach someone to think? I'm starting to see the appeal of driverless cars Sad

I would legalise undertaking, seems to work in America. I go on a 2 lane motorway most days and your usually stuck behind someone doing 60 who doesn't want to pull in as there's a lorry 300 yards ahead and they don't want to get stuck in the inside lane. If your allowed to undertake you make the decision whether your going to go fast enough to get across and back before they reach the lorry. The guy sat in front of you can't predict that but they can cruise along at 60 without having to think about anything but staying between the lines.

Alternatively reduce the population of the country... Wink

Here in Malta you're technically not allowed to undertake but so many people do it anyway its not really frowned upon by other drivers.
They usually expect you to do it!

It's good because there are plenty of clueless people driving about at 40kph without a clue

If I have cruise set to 70mph, I don't see why I should go from lane 1 to 3 and back to 1 because someone isn't paying attention. (It is strange they wake up enough to see you going past and give a dirty look?). As stated by others, there are many things to get annoyed about on our roads, but it helps to get it off your chest once in a while!

The problem arises when you do something that the other person REALLY doesn't expect. Their reaction may be excessive, or more likely, they could suddenly decide to move left and not look to see if you are doing something stupid like undertaking.

Why is it unsafe here but safe elsewhere? Only because its not the rules but having to make 4 lane changes rather than 2 for the sole reason that someone else is lacking in attention is not good either.

I do a lot of motorway driving pulling a big, heavy trailer and when I catch a middle lane hogger (especially on the 4 lane sections in the 'Manchester/Liverpool corridor') and I cannot go into the outside lane then I can either break a different rule by undertaking, or sit at whatever speed the fanny is driving at and hold everyone else up as well.

What bugs me more is the way people overtake me on the motorway (whatever speed I'm doing) and pull in front at parking distance ....

...and it is their own stupidity and ignorance that they caused that situation and messing up the traffic flow for everyone else - but of course they wouldn't see it that way or understand what they've doe wrong.

I really feel for the truck drivers as it's bad enough maintaining momentum when I'm towing fully laden in the 90.

Hi,

According to the Highway Code, if the inner line of traffic is moving faster than the outer line, it may pass on the inside.

What you can't do is to swing into the inner lane, pass the slower car, then swing out again. That isn't passing, it's overtaking.

Hopefully, I have posted a picture of my wife's SAAB that was overtaken (legitimately) by a curtain-sider on the M4 one wet and windy morning. She was doing 50mph at the time. Opened up by the tail-lift, took out her fuse box, lost her lights. She chased it, phoned me with the registration number.

The really annoying ones when yor lorry driving are the ones say in the inside lane at 50, you get most of the way past then they end their phone call, realise they've slowed down and speed off. You pull in then get a torrent of abuse off the cars behind you for holding them up for no reason because you haven't passed anyone :/

The other great one is the ones joining the motorway at 45 who don't look until they're at thr white line then blame you for not parting the waters for them so they can just drift on without a thought.

Hi,

You should have a two second gap between you and the car in front. And when you pull in, you should leave a two second gap between you and the car behind ... else the car behind has to slow down.

At 60mph you are doing 88 ft/sec ... add the length of your rig and call it 150 yards of gap before it is safe to pull in ... Officer.

Hi,

Middle lane? Yep, I can remember a middle lane incident ...

SWMBO and a Sergeant of Police were standing in the middle lane of the M4 wagging fingers in each others faces, while several PCs watched and listened, sniggering behind their notebooks.

OK, not as bad as it sounds ... it had taken us two hours to cover the last two miles. How did it end?

"Get your wife out of my sight, and I'll say no more about this!"

An offer too good to ignore?

a new one to amuse those of us in our speed limited vans is the balloons who fly up behind you when you are overtaking a truck, sit behind you at 63mph whilst you do it then hoon off again as soon as you pull in.

yet the outside lane was empty the whole time......

Hi,

Can anyone here produce an IDIOT SHEET (Sorry, LOGICAL TREE) that clarifies what the Highway Code says about passing on the inside. Pretty please!

To my pedantic mind, we are (it says) allowed to under-take a convoy of slower moving vehicles in the middle and outer lanes, but not a single vehicle in those lanes.

I am uncertain if I (when not in a convoy) can undertake anybody.

Oh sod it ... just do it!

Way back when, it was normal to "Exit West" out of London in the rush hour, with everybody and his brother clocking 80mph .... bumper to bumper

Sometimes you'd see a caravan mixing it with the big boys.

602

Overtaking was not an option.

I don't understand the people that don't use an empty outside lane either but it really winds me up when you come along and go into the outside lane to pass, get half way pas them, the van pulls in and they speed up to the same speed your doing. You then get the angry rep on your back side who thinks your being an ****. You either have to knock the cruise control off and go in behind them or speed up.

The other ones that wind me up are the ones that keep speeding up and slowing down, you get half way past and they zip off then you catch them a mile later. Or they pass you, pull infront then slow down. I think you should have to set a speed on the motorway and everytime you deviate from it you get an electric shock up the back end.

and texting or snap chatting or whatever. That's my real bug at the moment. Cars swerving all over the road and they're looking down at their phone. Surely if you look up, find your cars on the wrong side of the road after swerving back and speeding up again some part of your brain would think I can't do these two things at the same time not just go back to the phone.

I had one guy in the road works on the M1 in lane 3, kept slowing down to 30 and veering towards the middle lane then all of a sudden would snap back to the outside lane and speed up to 50 again. There was nothing in lane 1 and 2, only me and him in sight. I eventually passed and there he was head down, phone on his knee. Rolling Eyes
