Interesting discussions, I may look at getting some manual patrol axles then as quite rightly said the Yota's are way to expensive !

But still got the Sammy axles if I don't get any Patrol ones

Like the idea of lifting the engine & tranny up Scottie !

Raising the transmission was one of the best things I've done, the little bit of ground clearance gained and loss of things to get caught up underneath does make a difference, also means you can get away with less lift.

What size tyres do you want to run?

What patrol is best ? What years etc ? LWB or SWB ?

As I'm thinking the cheapest option would be to buy a whole car & dismantle it myself as it works out cheaper in a sense as you can get more for the lore that other parts may be useful !

Axles seem to be about 1000 !

Yeah that's why i said mine were a bargain.

I think it really comes down to what diff ratio you're after... which is going to related to what tyre size you want to run etc. You might get away with more if this is off road only and always stays in low range. Wouldnt like to say on a stock 1.6 vit though.

If you did get a complete vehicle to break i'd probably be interested in some bits off of it depending on what engine. I think i'm sort of on the look out for a gearbox/transfer case out of a 3.0 (or 4.2 but i don't think you'd likely find one of those?).

Have you thought about just getting a patrol? You might like it... Wink

Not keen on the patrol as a vehicle & its heavy & the engines are a big big for my liking !

I've found a pair of reasonable Patrol axles so I am thinking of going the whole hog with them !

But problem is will the Vit 1.6 engine be powerful enough ? What gearbox would I need ?

Anyone know what the diff ratios are on patrol axles ?

Already posted this...

...you'll need to know what they came off of originally.

I don't think a stock 1.6 will cut it based on my experience of a vitara on 31" tyres and 5.125 diffs. With patrol axles 4.625 diffs look best you'll get out of the factory. Also assuming you'll go bigger on the tyres too?

I plan to run a second transfer case which will be about 1.5:1 high range vs 1:1 of standard vit. At least that's the theory. I'm testing out "viability" of the transfer case on my none road legal one first. So I get a practice go. When I get round to it (apparently I'm now digging up my garden).

I've purchased some 98 patrol axles now & I was also thinking of going down the route of a Peugeot XUD engine conversion !

Or maybe a nice chunky V8 !!

As I believe your right I don't think the standard 1.6 Vit engine will be good enough !

Only think is will the standard Vit tranny be upto the patrol axles ??

Committed now then Wink

I think it'll work if you correct the gearing. But yeah would be interesting to know if XUD diesel conversion is enough by itself.

Where do you stop though.. that's the thing. At some point you've got to build it and see what fails I reckon.

So when are you starting the project?

What size tyres are you planning to run? that's the one thing that will decide the gearing you need.

If geared correctly a 1.6 will have no issues. The only issue is (like Rich says) you need to swap out the transfer box or run twins in a Vitara to get any reduction in high box.

Make sure it's a turbo version if you go XUD....I've done an XUD conversion for someone with an N/A and it was disappointing to say the least compared to a 1.6 8v.
