Hi after reading a few links in different sites & all the pros & cons of a live axle , I'm considering doing one myself , I have built various bits in the past but mainly just the normal lifts etc
I have a SJ413 front axle & s pair of Jimmy trailing arms, & I'm looking to put the Vit diff into the SJ diff & possibly put a locktight in there
But I'm having more of a problem working out the steering & lift height etc ! Do do I go for s high steer or Z link? And what are the best parts to use or where to get hold of them & the benefits of either !
Is there a max loft height for either type of steering ? Also what is the best coils to use & what height can I safely go to ??
I am looking to drive it on road, green landing & off course off road !! Any help please as I'm confused

Are you prepared to IVA it afterwards?

IVA scheme guide (.pdf)

IVA is a test - similar to the MOT - that a vehicle has to go through after it's had a number of modifications made, it works on a point system - it's worth reading the above .pdf it will tell you what you need to know and if you actually need to have a IVA test after you have done the modification.

I asked similar questions a while ago and folks on here told me Jimny springs.

Looking to play this game myself sometime in the future (getting closer as I 've now acquired pretty much all the bits I need). I read this...

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles

Then...

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations

As far as I can tell this might result in a vehicle inspection - what makes them decide that is not clear to me looking at the forms. However there is a points system which indicates if they need to change your number plate. I suspect it all gets a bit "matter of opinion esque" because you'll probably need to make relatively minor chassis mods in some way.

What's not clear to me is how many people actually bother doing this and run on the road.

Remember the IVA, if requested by the DVLA is about vehicle identity rather than its suitability for the road.

If you were bobtailing it or changing the body style or making it 30" shorter then you'd certainly need an IVA.

If all you are doing is changing an axle and axle mounts then I would keep schtum and see what the MOT tester has to say after you've finished. Irrespective of MOT tests etc, we are all responsible for keep our vehicles in a safe and roadworthy standard at all times when on the road.

Agree Richard, but it was the MOT man that was a bit worried that so much had been changed it has been bobtailed tray backed and chassis shortened engine changed.

Thats why if i am to use it on the road i would rather have it done right tested and all registered and insured correctly.

Aye, if you were only doing the axle since the last MOT that's one thing but if you've done it all .....
