This is probably going to sound very 'newbie', but I've always gone for old diesel 4x4s.

Petrol engines and water are relatively new ground for me. The engine in question is a nice and basic '93 1.4 8v Vauxhall lump, but I'm after general advice rather than specific.

What should I do to prep a petrol engine for deep water?

I had a misfire today going through some water, sprayed some WD40 around the HT lead ends, and that prevented a misfire on the next damp bit.
But, is WD40 the way to go, or should I be using something else (white grease maybe)?

No dizzy on this one, but I'm assuming it's WD40 in there if it had one?

I've got some electrical plugs for lighting stuff, and HID ballast things, I was going to stick them in plastic bags and cable-tie them up, with the cables coming out the bottom just in case water gets in. Is this a good idea, or are they best left out, but sprayed up?

If I should bag them, what should I clean them with first, as they are splashed with muddy water?

WD's great for getting rid of the wet, but going mad with a can of white grease will stop it from getting in there in the first place...but keep a can of WD in the glove box just in case the worst happens...
when I had my old RRC I moved the ecu into the cab and fitted a plastic sandwich box around the coil/ignition relays, white grease on everything else and tapped dizzy for a breather. worked great. Smile
