I need a cheapish (old, used) 4x4 that I will use for towing a flail mower and running around the fields, towing etc. currently have a Defender 110 but need to sell and get something cheaper £1500 to £3000. I need low range and diff lock. Been stuck on the slopes before in hi range. Thought about a decent Disco, maybe a Hilux (do they all have a transfer case)? Not sure what my options are... Any suggestion? I don't think the Wranglers have what I need.

Thanks, Vig

Most 4x4s have centre diff lock - if that is what you are talking about - very few have a selectable centre diff lock - series 1 Discoverys have selectable centre diff - discovery 2 don't, although the early ones have the same transfer box and the lever can be retrofitted.

Mk 2 Shoguns in the UK have a selectable centre diff lock and 2WD plus a rear diff lock as standard - the Pajero rarely has the rear difflock, Mk3 shoguns have the selectable centre difflock - not sure on the rear difflock though

All of the above have a low/high box as do the ones below.

Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, have a non selectable centre difflock - some of these may have limited slip diffs on the rear. Some of the newer Mitsubishi - L200 & Shogun Sport - do not have selectable centre diff

Thanks - that makes sense. I started looking into these things last night and focusing on smaller 4x4s. Fourtrak, Vitara, and Mitsubishi. Actually, the Shogun Pinin looked very interesting. Might be the right thing as I don't need huge towing capacity.

If your towing mowers etc would you be better with an auto?

Good point. I think I would prefer an automatic. I did find some Shoguns that fit the bill. A Toyota Hilux Surf is bit more expensive but there are some autos.

The baby pajero or shogans are difficult to lift as there mcphearson struts over the more normal torsion bars and coil springs trouble is nobody makes bits for them there bigger brothers are much better suited to industrial work and modified parts can be found

Vitara is OK but suffer weak front diffs unless you fit a steel one from a V6

Fourtrak and sportrak are both good although the gearbox can be a little weak on the sportrak if used hard

I would say you would be much better off with an older fourtrak. Still not a massive vehicle with Mechanical fuel pumps decent power from a bullet proof 2.8 diesel engine parts can be had quite cheap and there a very easy truck to work on.

Most have a removable hard top so could be used as a pick up if needed they can be lifted and decent rubber fitted for wet fields too very early ones were leaf sprung and are even simpler to work on

The Fourtraks seem to be highly regarded for their sturdiness and the 2.8 lump. The size of the vehicle is good and I can always hitch on a trailer if I need to pick up wood, sand and sundries. I like the idea of a simple, solid workhorse. The Pinin might still do the job so long as I don't modify, as you point out. Great info - thanks!
