Evening guys/gals

im Matt from Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

im looking into getting into green laning/soft roading potentially leading into off roading properly.

im looking for the right vehicle for the job, i quite like the idea of having a pickup(navara) how ever, budget and having two dogs means its a non starter, so this means it will have to be a conventional 4x4, ive had a lifted Vit 4U2 with off road tyres and steel bumpers, after months of nagging i had to change vehicles due to it been too "tinnie" ect ect, so interior wise it will have to be comfy too for "the boss" haha

Also im looking at setting up my own garage(im a NVQ level 3 qualified mechanic) in the Thirsk area specialising in 4x4s

sorry for the long post, thanks for bearing with me!! lol

One of the thing I love about my pickup is the fact that when the dogs stink from going in dykes or the sea I can stick them in the back of the pickup and have a nice ride home. The same goes for dirty equipment / clothing if your working with it. The length, suspension design and rear overhang do limit their offroad (and on road) ability but if they can't get down a green lane with a set of ATs you probably shouldn't be driving it. Some have rear difflocks and can tow a good weight which might be handy for your business.

Alternatively it just comes down to what you like. troopers, Jeep Cherokees, discoveries etc will all do the job and all have their pitfalls and things to look out for.

Thanks for the reply, im currently leaning towards a Terrano, towing wise im limited by mi licence any way which is a pain in the backside but thats life.. haha

i see what your saying about the pickup, i have a lab and a jack russel, the lab just stinks and the jack likes rolling in poo lol

forgive the question, but why a specialist 4x4 garage if you are new to the game?

Thats a very reasonable question:-

Im new to the culture of off roading ect however ive been working on 4x4s for years, however working on them dosent really tell you what they are actually like off road. my staple diet work wise for a couple of years was land rover defender(ones painted NATO green) but do have experience on many others too.

Now im stuck working on tracked vehicles, which whilst they would make great offroads, present a few parking issues, not to mention the mpg they dont get! lol

ok, so you have an MT background. (theres more of us on here than you would think)

unless you were down south working on the BV`s ect, then its fair to say that they were all standard issue.

i dont want to put you off, and this is meant in the nicest way, but theres a whole world of pain you are about to dip your toe into mate. half finished projects, badly thought out lifts, cross eyed camber. and you, as a specialist are supposed to have the answers.

have a look through the custom builds section.

this is the type of vehicle you will be presented with, and they have their own unique set of problems.....

GEDs right, and I really don't mean to put you off either, just challenge you for a conversation!

A prime example is of who/what he's talking about is me. I have a front g wagon axle casing that needs a little bit of work if you'll take it on... its only been sent back unfinished by 2 machine shops! Wink Smile

no, i appreciate exactly what you are saying and would much rather have people like yourself that would question me and get me out of the way of thinking im stuck in. Ive done a small amount of work on the BVs, they are an........interesting bit of kit to say the least lol

as for the G Wagon axle issue, id have to recommend finding a good machine shop lol i can recommend one up this way that would suit your every need, however machining isn't something i can do personally.

because of where i live, the vast majority of 4x4s are defenders, early defenders at that, which farmers own.
