I'd disconnect wastegate and go for a drive and see if boost increases need to be careful turbo doesn't overboost though mine runs 20psi probably don't want to go much higher than that. Also possible that it isn't getting enough fuel to make more turbo pressure there is tips on adjusting this in the thread at the top of the fourtrak section.

if you disconnect the wastegate you won't get any boost
the wastegate actuator keeps the wastegate closed until the turbo over boosts
The wastegate itself is on the exhaust manifold and will get hot and then rusty - the rust causes it to not close properly
disconnect the wastegate linkage and operate the wategate by hand (best to do it when the engine is cold) when closing the gate by hand - it should move freely and klunk closed (metal on metal sound) if it jams close with no sound or you can't move it you will either need to clean it or replace the manifold

Sorry but you're wrong. Here's a pic of a fourtrak turbo.
The little round canister which has pressure applied through the pipe on the front has a spring in it with a diaphragm in front of it which is attached to the wastegate actuator rod. When pressure builds to the right amount to overcome the spring it pushes the diaphragm back opening the wastegate which bypasses the exhaust wheel on the turbo so it slows the turbo down. If the hose that goes to it is disconnected the wastegate won't operate and if it then boosts freely this tells you the wastegate actuator has a weak spring or a bad diaphragm. Halfway through typing this I realised you must have thought I meant disconnecting the rod sorry for the confusion

The little round canister is the wastegate actuator - the wastegate is the bit on the other end of the rod inside the manifold

He's just pointing out that you said to disconnect the waste gate, not the waste gate actuator. Doing either one would have very different results as you know...

Well if we are going to be picky then disconnecting the actuator could also mean the rod going to the turbo as that is a part of the actuator??? So nobody is right!

you're obviously a pessimist, saying nobody's right. Me being an optimist I believe we are all right.

I'm sure we can agree on one thing, that fourtraks are ****** marvellous Especially pushing 20psi with a tweaked fuel pump good fun leaving people in a cloud of smoke wondering how the hell an old diesel can go that quick!

There is a valve on the nearside wing that restricts boost when in first gear if this isnt working properly or is not connected you wont get full boost.I drove mine for 6 years like this as it wasnt connected following a gearbox change i just blanked it off now get full boost in any gear

Thanks for letting us know, I hate problem threads that don't end up with the solution at the end...

I have still got it in the garden just so I can hang out here! Actually cant bring myself to sell so thinking of fitting a tow bar and using it to lug the new LR buggy around....

Good idea - you can use it to lug the LR to trials, then unhitch the trailer and use the Fourtrak for the trial (because you know damn well the LR'll be broken just getting it off the trailer) after which you can hitch the trailer up and lug it home again

We have been joking about this since I picked it up!
I even talked about getting a day time MOT and putting it on the road for a bit of fun (technically illegal I know) and my mate said "don't bother, you'll need the trailer to get it home anyway"
