This week's rant.

Traffic Lights: I thought they meant stop/do not proceed.
So stop driving through them on red Evil or Very Mad

Noticed this more and more recently tonight was the last straw. Heading onto the roundabout at the A34/M3 junction I timed my entrance for the lights changing. I entered the roundabout a good 5 seconds after it went green for me, only to have a car race across my bows.

The 90 would have made a right mess of that shopping trolley if I hadn't taken avoiding action to miss t-boning it into the shrubbery.

Problem I've noticed this is becoming the norm at most junctions now ...

Just T-bone them - guarantee they won't jump the lights again...

As I went through some lights the other day they changed to amber - the car well behind me, and I mean well behind me followed me through, obviously on red Rolling Eyes

I think there is a little misunderstanding going on here.....

It's only wrong, if you get caught out.

I do that often....

because the first lane I join the motorway on is a filter lane for the next junction Laughing

When I moved to Sheffield I used to get beeped at for stopping at a red light, the norm seemed to be 3 cars though on red. After living there a while I came close to running into the back of 'outsiders' a few times for stopping on an amber light Laughing

What annoys the heck out of me at roundabouts are the people who join in the left lane, use the middle/right lane to go around then the left lane to exit forcing me to avoid them. The painted line means something you know!!! I used to get angry at them and (before the days of abs) deliberately lock up the wheel and beep the horn but you'd get either a confused, blank or angry look. They clearly had no idea that they nearly rammed into the side of me.

Another one that gets me is people who come upto a t-junction, stop, look, see you approaching at 60, wait, look again, wait, pick their nose, change radio station, check their hair, then go forcing you do brake like crazy, sometimes you have to swerve to avoid them. All you get is the same look as the roundabout guy.

Another I find is people who look, can't see anything due to a car or bush or whatever so go. I think the wording they're taught with must be "if you can't see anything then go" which should really read "if you can see a clear road then go"

And what is it with people who insist on joining the motorway at 40 and don't look for a gap until their wheels are on the white line? They clearly think the indicator is similar to the device used to part the river!

And another... no, I'll stop now, the veins in my forehead can't cope!

im gonna win this.

i travel two junctions up to care for mum every day.

the junction i come off at looks like this (driving left to right)

came up there today around the tight left hander (tighter than the map looks) to come face to face with a transit van parked where the yellow block is.totally blocking lane 1 and no hazard lights on.

i swerved around the van, still doing 60 odd to come face to bumper with a bloke standing in lane 2....

so i swerved around him and came to rest on the shoulder where the triangle is.

i run back whilst on the phone to the police and he took a swing at me. i managed to drag him out of the way of a beemer that came upon two loonies fighting on the motorway and buried him face down in the brambles on the verge........

to cut a very long story short, he blew 152 at the roadside and 156 lower reading at the station. the copper said he was still rising but thy gave up.

No contest mate - how do you find these.

I was only cut up by a Man 8x8 travelling at excess speed at a set of lights today - I have the reg and will be passing the details onto his unit tomorrow via our MTO. Cool

gave a statement and the copper gave me a message from the bloke.

he wont press charges for me pushing his face into the brambles (during the struggle) and wished to thank me for saving his life as it seems it was deliberate.

Shocked

Hi,

I managed to stop ... without a lot of fuss before the lights turned red ... and the car behind passed me.

About par for the course.

Have you ever noticed that different parts of the country have different styles of driving...

I'm off up the south coast tomorrow and I shall have to adapt my driving all the way - especially on the roundabouts and traffic lights Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Hi,

Narrow service road in front of houses. Me posting letter. Start off, wrong side of road, cars parked on my left. Another car arrives, parks on my left, woman gets out, is about half way up her garden path, as I am about to pass her parked car. I'm doing about 15mph.

Rear door of her car swings open, leg appears underneath. I yank steering wheel, go onto grass verge. Couldn't have stopped in time, it was that close. If I'd hit the door, it would have cut his legs off.

Kid (12ish) did seem to know what he'd done. His Mum couldn't understand why I was giving her a mouthful. Embrionic Darwinism

True, but he wouldn't have any more if 602 hadn't managed to avoid hitting the door and cut his legs off!

Had a good air show at a junction near me recently. It's a "T" juction with traffic lights but for some reason most people ignore the red light when coming up the upright of the T. I overheard one of the onlookers saying that the lights are so 60s! I think that meant they just ignore them, and that does seem to be the case.

Back to the air show; there were two air ambulances, three fire engines, several ambulances and first responders and a large posse of police cars. The good news is that the air ambulances left without any casualties, so there couldn't have been any very serious injuries and only two people were carted off in ordinary road ambulances. With some trees, power wire and street lights in fairly close proximity the helos did a nice bit of manouvering to get out without bumping in to anything. And before Ged reminds me, with my record if I had been driving there might have been some firewood for sale!

You guys would love it here....
at roundabouts, the lane choice doesn't matter, people go left from the right lane and right from the left lane, or even change their minds halfway around
people park on roundabouts too...

Is this what is meant when people say they got there in a roundabout sort of way?

roundabouts.............. learn what lane ffs!

Hi Ged,

Long time replying to this.

What lane? That depends on which Highways Planner was on duty the day they painted the lines on the road.

There is one roundabout in Swansea where....

... the approach from the South is inner lane turns right only, and outer lane is straight on and turn right.

... the approach from North is nearside lane is turn left and straight on, outer lane is turn right only.

Note that scarcely anybody turns to West, but approaches from both directions have a lane dedicated to turning West. On my way to work, rush hour, the inner lane when approaching from North was always solid stationary traffic, outer lane was always empty.

I saw nothing wrong in approaching in the outer lane, and doing a full 360 round the roundabout. One day I followed a 17ton Council Refuse truck which did the same thing.
