What are the pros and cons of using winter tyres all year round? I need to get a set of tyres for Jaqi's Micra and I can get a good deal on Toyo Snowprox S943 which are a winter tyre. She doesn't do big miles and there is no real requirement for a snow/winter tyre.

I'd be interested to hear what the experts say, but from observing my continental colleagues who had a long term perspective on this, the basically said:
You have two sets of tyres, which will do X mileage each. So all you are doing is putting your costs up front on one purchase as now you have 2 sets of tyres which will do 2x mileage. Oh, and the recieved wisdom was that winter tyres on warm tarmac would wear more as the rubber was generally out of it's operating window.
My take - don't know enough (so whut up already I hear you cry) but for my colleagues it was legal requirement to have the winter tyres and they never considered running a winter tyre not in winter...
...I suppose it would also be less fuel efficient and possibly noisier as they won't be optimised for normal road use.

Ian, there aren't any real pro's and cons to fitting winter tyres all year round, British Gas and others do it, but not the Police, unless you are in Scotland where they usually fit them October time. You can expect them to maybe wear slightly faster during the summer but that would depend on the weather, wet weather will 'save' them to a certain extent, dry hot roads will not.I have people who use them year round in the countryside where they are used as a very mild forest rally type of tyre, good grip where roads are muddy or slippery but good grip available in other road conditions. Are they less fuel efficient? going by what people tell me they are not, i have used them all year before now i have not noticed any increase in road noise or using more fuel.A Micra isn't that heavy so which will help to lessen the burden on them .

Thanks for the great advice as always. Think I'm just going to go for "normal" tyres. We put a set of winter tyres on one fo the Company cars this week ansd they are a very soft compound so I can't see wear being that great!

It's the softness that helps snow / winter tyres work in the cold weather.
If they're soft I would expect more give in the side walls too? I noticed a difference on the pickup when I went from highway to all terrain. They feel like they're tucking under on corners.
Did you know in Germany you have to swap to winter tyres and people often have 2 sets of wheels, the tyre places swap them for you and store your spares.

Compound is the problem when it comes to winter tyres, it needs to be fairly soft to grip ice/snow but hard enough to last more than a few thousand miles. What make of tyres do you have on the company car?

i have a set of winter tyres on spare rims for my rover, they work well in the cold weather and are great in what bit of snow we get.
i bought a set of snow socks 4 years ago but ive not needed to get them out of the bag yet.
no idea about summer use wear...im fitting them this weekend and will take them back off when it warms next year.

You would find if the temperature hovered at around -7 to -10 that when winter tyres start to work at their best.

Yogi (my winch bitch) had a wee audi and swapped to winter tyres (on steel rims) when the snow hit. He found that in warm weather (over 5C) the tyres quickly became so soft that the car slid around like it was on marbles.

There is that about them.Know of a medic who leases a C500 from MB, the dealers called it in a couple of weeks back to fit winter tyres, the rears are more than 85% worn already so it will be in for more before the months end i expect.

Different driving styles, different makes of tyre will all make a huge difference, especially to anyone who uses them part time. The medic with the C500, his sister uses snow/ice tyres all year on a E350 she uses Bridgestone and the last set did 47 thousand miles.

He does like his fast cars i must admit, it's one of the quicker C500 i have driven, as for tyres a Range Rover Supercharged he had a while back was wearing normal road tyres in 5k, but with 520-530 bhp that was to be expected, this C500 is a lease car, the lease company never query when he needs tyres on it.
