Mike - you ever drive down the bus routes and see those big posters on the side of the bus stop shelters saying "Advertising works, you're reading this" - I've always wanted to stop and add the post script "Yes but I ain't buying am I"

I do remember one advert, some do stick in your mind:
Hello boys!

Nice part of the world, Predannack airfield has lots of abandoned aircraft that are easily visible if you walk around the perimeter of the place.

Had lunch in st ives and managed to bag a window seat overlooking the harbour, much to the disgust of the home counties chinless wonders.

Then worked our way round to st Michaels mount

Seeing this is a pessimistic thread...

The problem with Cornwall is although they have the nice beaches and waves etc. I find that is is very expensive - like to park - I mean like Lands end is free but you spend a fortune before you get to it...

The junky tourist shops in the towns all selling the same junk Cornish souvenirs made in China Rolling Eyes which don't open until Good Friday and close on August bank holiday regardless of interest...

And St Ives.... once the home of genuine artists - still genuine, still artists but you have to add the word CON between the other two...

One wonders Ged, seeing you visited at this time of year, will you have enough money left for christmas... Twisted Evil

Forget st ives, padstow was the big shocker.

£20 hoodies being hawked to "verity" and "cordillia" for £160 quid.

Rick Stein now owns huge chunks of the town centre and if it's not his name, it's his wife's on everything. People walking round in mucking out boots because it's fashionable. Usually the aforementioned home counties chinless wonders.

I managed to find a local and ask what happened.

Since Mr stein (as he likes to be called) moved in, the local shopkeepers were slowly forced out. Everything is now geared towards fleecing the yuppies of every penny, but none of the money stays in the local economy. Thus, padstow closes fro. November to March.

Not just the shops for the yuppies...

Everything, coz there's no locals left to shop there.

Only the working part of the harbour is unaffected.

The other shock was indeed the parking. I must have spent a good 60 quid since I got here. Things like bedruthan steps, a natural occurring rock formation has been bought by the National Trust.... Along with every field for miles around.

But, the biggest shock of all...

The ****** pasties.

It was March 1990 when I left the RAF. I decided to get myself a job in Newquay and stay down here so I could do 6 months of sunbathing. I got a job at the local bakery driving the van all over Cornwall delivering pasties. started at 6 a.m. and finished at 12:30 so was ideal for me as I had all afternoon free to go fishing, surfing ect.

The pasties were 70p for small and £1 for large.

Now I know that was 25 years ago, but the price of food hasn't gone up that much.

Now, the humble oggie is.......£4:50.

For a pastie.

And that says more about Cornwall than anything

Well true-ish, except that a pastie wouldn't be Cornish anyway - any more than a corn beef pastie would be...

Only a pasty can lay any claim to be an oggie Wink

Prices are stupid down there. I took the caravan down for 2 weeks and spent £2,500 all in Shocked and I had to stay in my own caravan Shocked There was nothing free, you couldn't get anywhere for the traffic and everyone looked at you with pound signs in their eyes. The weather was awful so we couldn't just hang around the campsite / beach.

The same year we had 2 weeks all inclusive in Portugal for £1400. That included flights, hotel, transfers, food & drink, kids clubs, evening shows etc. Go figure why people go abroad!

Although the traffic in cornwall did yeild one amusing event, it was 2 lanes going into 1 with about a 2 mile tailback, the guy on the inside lane made a space for me to merge but the guy behind me (to be known as DH) shot into it and undertook me, so the guy in the inside lane made another space and I merged behind DH, who then flagged me. Now I'm not the perfect driver by any means and if I'd done something wrong then I would accept it, but I am 100% sure I had done nothing to this guy so as the traffic stopped I pulled out to the O/S lane, stopped level with DHs car and wound down my passenger window. He looked across at me, floored it and wheelspun straight into the back of the stationary van infront of him. He then refused to get out to talk to the van driver and through his window which he would only open an inch sited the reason for the accident as I was trying to push in Laughing

I felt sorry for the guy in the van obviously but I couldn't have been happier that the guy in the car received such instantaneous karma Laughing

None of yous lot know what an oggy is - that is an oggy pronounced like a capital letter "O" followed by a "w" and then "ggy" - unless you have been chased by one, or even a herd of them in the dead of night after closing time. I dunno what it is that makes them go wild, some people say it is the scrumpy fumes on your breath after you have had a few pints or six, but others say it is the spirits of the deceased locals trying to keep the foreigners out (which is fully justifiable if they had come agross Ged). But whatever, being chased by they oggies makes the s**t boil in your a**e and makes you beat the four minute mile record. I've still got the scars from being chased by they oggies through the brambles and then down the cliff face by the coastguard station to the sea. It was only my girlfriend who could drink the scrumpy drinking locals under the table that saved the day (or was it the night?) by putting a curse on they oggies.

J

PS: my then girlfriend was very handy in a bundle as she could see off half a dozen drunken squaddies and she was very good in bed, but exhausting!
