Hi All.
I've had a swb indy fourtrak for a few years and it needs to come off the road for some serious welding work, so i've been and bought a 1989 fourtrak to use whilst doing the work. the 1989 is the leaf spring model and has poor tyres. can I fit the wheels off the indy or will this cause problems. I can sort the arches if the wheels stick out to far but I wanted to check if it would be a good idea.
Thanks.

wheels will fit fine, its the axles on the indy that are wider not the wheels offset. You should just keep the leafer they're better anyway, not that I'm biased at all Smile Wink

Great news, Thanks.

The seller needs to remove some gun racks and dog cages so I haven't picked the leafer up yet so can't really compare it to the indy, the indy is a turbo but the other isn't and until i get my trailer on it and see how it pulls I wont know which I'll be keeping for work.

what are your reasons for choosing the leafer over the indy?

no real reason for going for a leafer other than I wanted a pair of live axles for an easy (found out now its not!) swap to some merc axles I had in the shed! I do like older cars and the appeal of leafs and proper axles makes them cooler to me Cool

I do think the f70's are better of road and tougher; found a turbo diesel one, stuck some Suzuki wheels and bucket seats on it and did the whole of last year with no problems until some water got in the engine Rolling Eyes just bought an indy to pull the engine for mine....

not sure what you want your truck for but if its towing and work then the indy may actually be better Embarassed Daihatsu changed them to a wider track to make them more stable for towing and changed to independent for a better road handling and comfort!

Picked the leafer up today, happy with it overall but without the turbo its very slow compared to the indy. the leafer is really solid and has only done 41k. I can see myself getting used to it but would the turbo engine fit in without to much trouble. Has anyone done this swap?

Should be a bolt in swap and you have everything you need with the donor truck...pretty straight forward!

I am just about to swap intercooled td from an indy into my leafer (next weekend or I start missing local events) so i'l keep you posted if I come up against anything that turns into a problem... Smile

First problem.
The transfer box lever has gone to custard. this fourtrak is the one with the electric switch for 4x4, I knew this had issues when I bought it and have looked in to what the problem is and it seems as though the transfer lever is not connected in properly. I haven't taken the carpet up yet to have a look but wondered if anyone knew what to look for.
does the lever even come out?
I can still drive it but at the minute its in 4wd high so i've had to disengage the front hubs. the switch on the dash does nothing.
