Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I was driving my td5 defender 90 this morning on the motorway and a nice chap let me in a gap. I went to use my hazards to acknowledge him. They didn't work. Instead I heard a crackling noise and the radio went off. Does any body have a clue what's going on. I did jet wash it the other day and I'm wondering if some water got in somewhere..

Have you checked the fuses?
The TD5 is especially sensitive to earthing issues even by LR standards and if you've jetwashed the engine bay you may have cause a wee problem.

Wot Richard said. TD5s are noted for getting wet in the wrong places from jet washing and wading - and even weeing on them. Also, it's worth checking connecters as they like to gather the wet stuff.

So I checked the fuses and they all seem fine. The radio worked when I started it again later. Tried the hazard again and the radio and the internal light went off but came back on when I switched it off. There was a crackling sound coming from the fuse box. Sounded like it was at the bottom lefthand side.

Hazard warning switch failure is a known problem with Land Rovers. The fact that you went to use them first (to flash someone) and they didn't work could be a dead switch, which has popped something in the left side of the fuse box.

So it turns out that the electric harness had been rubbing on top of the gear box and has worn through. Took me and a mechanic friend a while to find. All fixed now though.
