Hi I apologise if the topic been spoke of before but I couldnt find one .
I am wondering if anyone knows at what point a or in my case all tyres with signs of cracking slightly on the top part of the wall and in the tread need replacing . This is for a car and I have a long 6 hour trip to do soon and I'm gonna be doing about 1000 miles , so I'd rather be safe then sorry but I don't want to pay out if it's not nessursary. Thanks

My thought would be to take it to a friendly MOT guy and get him to look at them. The MOT manual he has will tell him how bad tyre cracking has to be to fail the test, if he saying they want changing then you really want to change them.

If the tyres have surface cracking then you should be OK, much deeper than surface cracking then they really want chucking away, but that's me, they may well have been like it for a year or 18 months, but sitting in UV rays not doing anything doesn't do any tyre any good.

Thank you for your reply Mr tyre , I have had them checked by a tyre speacialist it is just surface cracking and I should get at least another 3000 miles . It's not as bad as I thought , but at least I know now .

As far as the MOT is concerned, then as long as you cannot see canvas at the bottom of the crack and the tyre is still the correct shape (no bulges) then it will pass.

Whether or not it is sensible to drive on them is a different matter.

I have just replaced such a tyre. When it was just surface cracks I kept an eye on them, but drove on it OK.

Then one day, I started getting a bit of vibration at certain speeds. The cracks had opened up slightly, although not much.

At that point I thought it sensible to change the tyre.
