I have to replace both an upper and lower ball joint on different sides of the car. Is there any difference between the upper and lower joint as they look the same apart from the boot? I have read conflicting information on a few forums. Some say there is no difference, others say the top joint can go in the bottom but not the other way around. Is one joint built stronger than the other.

Also is there any difference with steering boxes. I recently fitted one from another car but kept my arm as it was easier. Now I can't turn as far to right but can turn far enough to the left that the tyre rubs.

Not sure whether other year models might differ - but on my 2000 model 1.7 with carby the upper and lower ball joints are the same.

I can't center it because the spline has been cut so it only goes on in one position

The ball joints are exactly the same across the Niva range. Top and bottom are the same although they can have different part numbers.

The 'lock stops' for the steering are on the bottom of the pitman arm on the steering box. They are set and not adjustable.

Pitman arms also vary between the RHD and LHD models and between the Niva (2121) and the Riva (2105) cars. The arms look very similar to each other.

You need to ensure that your long and short ball joints are the same length on each side of the car, sorry don't know the initial set up length, these must be adjusted at the same time when doing the tracking. Alternatively when they are set OK, use the centre steering rod to adjust the tracking.

Look after the steering rod, they are specific to the RHD cars and are no longer available.
