Anyone with a 300 tdi auto willing to do a test for me?
I want to put a PTO winch on my project vehicle and need to know if the hydraulic autobox will change up when the transfer box is in neutral
put your transfer box in neutral and rev the engine to 2500 rev/min
does the gearbox change up? i'm told it runs on back pressure and should but....
my td5 does not, but it electronic not hydraullic
can someone try?

Sorry, I forgot all about this.
Just went out and tried it there and either box in D and the t/f in neutral I couldn't hear or feel any gear changes that I could be sure of.
I've had some gearbox problems solved by a filter and fluid change which I need to do again before I'm happy the box is fine but logic tells me that without the physical resistance of the drivetrain I'm not sure it will change gear. That said, when in the mud and stuck with all 4 wheels turning it does change gear and with the resistance of a pto winch it might do.
You may be able to control it by holding the box in 1 or 2?

Auto box should operate as normal load or not.
The later electronically controlled boxes might be a different kettle of fish. but then again the box its self on a td5 is the same as a tdi. its just the selector servo that's different.
Cant see any reason a winch PTO shouldn't work on the auto. in fact it should be even nicer than the manual box.

Truth is I already have the pto winch setup from a utilities defender. I had a crisis of confidence that it wouldn't work and I'd wasted my money.
The engine/box is still out my project so I think I'll just try it (one day when I can get the engine/box installed)
Thanks both
Steve

don't the later electronic types have their changes controlled by and ecu based on load and road speed, speed signal would still be present if wheels were spinning.
might be worth looking into compushift http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/compushift.html this would allow you to fully control what your autobox does

Yes the later boxes are electronic. Like the one in my td5. I wanted no ECUs in my truck so went for the hydraulic box. Ashcroft supplied it. Will be bloody expensive to then buy another electronic box and the compushift, just to get a pto winch.
If the hydraulic box does not work I'll just sell the winch and get a 24v electric one.
Thanks
Steve
