Hi all, long time since I've been on as it's a long time frankly since I've looked at my Sammy. I have an SU HIF44 carb on my G16a Vit engine and I don't have vacuum advance. I've seen a write up where I can drill a tiny hole in the carb but I'm not sure I'm skilled enough for such a delicate operation. Can I get vacuum advance any other way like electronic? I drive my Sammy on-road mostly.

if your not too precious then pierce a tiny hole into whatever rubber boot joins your carb to air box (close to the carb as possible) and push the vacuum hose into that, done it myself and it works fine...

I've already got that, a long time ago I drilled a hole in the carb intake and mounted a small bleed nipple and piped it to the dizzy vac advance, but I seem to remember being told that it wouldn't work since it's on the wrong side of the butterfly valve? It's been a long time and I can't really remember why but I seem to remember they were either right or at least were very convincing that I'd got it wrong?

All cars I have ever owned all have it pre butterfly, but a quick google did reveal that a minority has it taken from manifold.
If you want to check whether yours is working test it with a timing light, try it with & without the vacuum pipe connected...

Good idea I've got a strobe test light I'll do that. Here's a pic of where I installed the bleed nipple.

Looks like a tidy install. Keep us posted on the progress... How far it advances pre/post butterfly will be interesting if you can rig up a temporary way of fitting the pipe into your brake vacuum pipe or something... I think what concerns me is that with it post butterfly, at idle it will be a huge vacuum and advance the ignition loads?

Thats in the right place.
If its on the engine side of the butterfly you get full advance at idle. Set up like a Mini
If its on the air filter side of the butterfly you get no (or minimal) advance at idle.
It should work there, but I think having the piston between the vac advance port and the butterfly valve messes up the vacuum a bit.
