Sarn Helen has once again had a visit from a 4x4 group that brings off road driving into disrepute.
A few nights ago a group travelled the byway as it was going dark.
They propped open four farm gates, leaving them open resulting in cattle and sheep getting out through the night.
The gate going into the forestry section at the top was taken off it's hinges and thrown aside, presumably because there was nothing available to prop the gate open.
I believe it was either last Tues or Wednesday night ?, and there is a meeting this week with those concerned and the local authority etc.
I will try and find out more in the coming week.
Crying or Very sad

As far as I know due to the time of night nobody knows who they were, but that could change, hopefully someone will name them.

My conspiracy theory...

A number of hard core Ramblers have bought 4x4s and are driving green lanes in this manner with the intent of getting them closed to genuine 4x4ers

... end of my conspiracy theory

hahah nice theory!!!

seriously though how hard is it to shut a gate? when me and my mates go out we ALWAYS shut the gates behind us... its not a problem as that responsibility goes to the passengers!!!

have these people never heard of the country code??? Sad

At the risk of being labelled a spoilsport, as far as I'm concerned only ne're do wells use greenlanes after dark. IMO night time laning should be ranked along with off piste driving taking into account the current ongoing problem farmers have with plant/animal theft. We have enough problems already. Lets hope these guys get pulled.

Spoil sport!
Personally I prefer green laning at night, less people to bother...
As we know, people will have a moan even if the off roader is in the right!!!

Makes it a little bit more interesting as well when you can't really see anything Wink

As genuine green lanes are public rights of way, to attach a stigma to night time laning is almost like saying you shouldn't drive down country lanes at night!

Point taken.

Guess you don't go laning for the views then? Wink

See that's always bothered me.

I do go for the views and the social.

Personally I get a bit annoyed when people choose their lanes as to how "challenging" they are.

Smacks a bit of pay an play to me.

Yes, same for me. I'll happily drive my S1 landy on stone or tarmac lanes. I prefer tarmac and if I want to off-road, I go to an event.

Most of the lanes around here are pretty simple and quite scenic, but occasionally I drive 30-40 miles to go do some rutted lanes...
mostly pay and play for proper off roading though to be honest

I think its fair to say that most of us on this forum lane by the book, we also like a bit of a challenge if possible, if Twiss likes to lane in the dark who am I to knock that if it doesn't upset locals. Perhaps I was a tad incorrect on my original post, who am I to say what is right or wrong if its legal.

I've been working away for a while so a bit out of touch.
The bottom end of Sarn Helen now has a new steel gate and gate posts, it is chained and padlocked, there are also block stones either side of the gate, apparently this was done by the local council.

I also do night laning. I would feel awkward meeting ramblers/horse riders etc. Even though a lot of them are stuck up *******.

But again night laning is a lot more adventurous and I keep noise to a minimum if I find myself going past someones home etc.

Even been caught on some scrubland at night by police but they were not bothered when they confirmed I wasn't out nicking Defenders etc.

Being considerate and polite should be the first thing. A lot of legitimate laners can get very defensive about the matter when confronted; even if they are doing nothing wrong, which only causes tension.

It works both ways. Don't forgets 4x4's especially jacked and kitted up can be quite intimidating to some people.
