This sunday I am fitting a screen to a Defender. I have a new glass and rubber plus lots of strong string and a fair bit of washing up liquid. Has anyone else done it? Is it better to fit the rubber to the glass and pull it to the frame or fit it to the frame and pull the glass in?

Any advice is great (that isn't dont bend it)

thanks.

Will post what happens.

Mike.

Ouy of interest, how tight should the seal be to the glass befor its put in the frame as ours seems rather loose.

Thanks.

It's not too difficult. Easier if you have someone to help.
Fit the rubber onto the glass, it will be quite slack. Wrap your string around the groove that will fit over the frame lip. It needs to be nylon cord or it will snap. Para cord is best. The ends need to cross over at the top.
Offer the screen up to the frame. I find it helps to lay a strip of 9mm plywood in the gutter at the bottom of the screen frame, this will stop the screen slipping out.
Pull the string out gently, get your helper to lean on the outside of the screen to help ease it in. Pull one side and then the other to get the top corners in, then one side at a time to get the bottom corners in.
If it all goes wrong just take it out and start again!
Good luck!

Just one question, if you had the glass with the seal on only, would the seal stay attached as we have just mocked it up and it just falls off. The seal has no corners to locate the edges so we are using the joined part at the centre of the glass.

Huge thanks.

I always used to use a bit of Vaseline on the rubber. The last bit gets a bit tight and some sloppy stuff helped.

I seem to remember the rubber never being a good fit either....

Give it a go. As long as you don't push too hard to break the glass (you won't), what can go wrong?

At the moment the seal will not stay on the glass as it's quite a bit bigger. I am looking forward to having a go but this seal seems wrong, I have called a fitter and they said that the seal should be"stupidly tight" and there are a good number of people saying that the seals should be put in boiling water to help them go on. If I use hot water I will be able to pass the glass straight through.

Ok so it's not me. I went back to the place where I bought the seal and they agreed that the seal was too big. So a replacement seal is being delivered on Tuesday

Not wanting to advertise but if you're in Staffordshire (im normally Norfolk) I would strongly recommend BEAM ENDS. Its a young lad who really knows his stuff and he's a good bloke with good prices.

Have fitted the screen!

I found a few tips if you have a go.

1) dont bother trying to locate the screen into the frame along the bottom edge, as you pull the paracord it will pull it over but go slowly.

2) pull to the centre of the screen as this pulls the rubber over really well

3) wrap the paracord around a screwdriver or similar to pull with as as it will really take a lot of force to pull

4) run into the frame side of the seal a fair bit of washing washing up liquid as it will help the cord to come out.
5) use a good amount of washing up liquid on the frame lip as it will go over easier.

6...the best help I can give) dont be tempted to put washing up liquid in the glass side of the seal its going to ve a little bit difficult to get the seal on but the resistance will be helpful later when fitting the screen.

And it turns out that the seal to the glass isnt that tight at all when you put it on but do make sure that you put the seal on the glass all the way as it will hold its self on despite looking way too big.

For us it took an hour to do and I do think we could do one in 20m. Dont pay autoglass or similar, get the parts and a mate and a few beers and have a go. !
