Hi,
Moved house, no telephone connection till Wednesday. Using Kindle and plug-in WiFi. Struggling.
PC is live. SPAM is live.
Monitor is connected to CPU (?) Tower by power cable, but does not switch on. No little lamp.
During the move, I seem to have lost the THIN wire that connects the monitor to the CPU. Could that explain the lack of monitor activity?
I have a complete PC assembly at my old house, but that is a nine hour return journey, and £60 in fuel. I had not intended reoturning just yet

The monitor should have 2 cables minimum plugged in
One will be a "kettle lead" (commonly found in kettles)
Needs to be plugged into power socket
and the other will be some kind of video lead that will go between the monitor and the PC.
This will either be a VGA lead (usually blue connectors), or a DVI lead (usually on more modern PCs, with white connectors)
Some monitors may also have an audio cable... 3.5mm minijack, basically the standard audio lead... should not effect the monitor operation
It sounds like your monitor is powered directly from the PC power supply
(i.e the pc will have two big SPAM, usually black, power cables in the back)
... if so, it stays plugged into that rather than a power socket

Hi,
I'm still struggling with SWMBO' s Kindle.
My monitor is connected into blue socket on back of the tower. Does the monitor run on mains voltage? If so, can I use the tower's kettle lead direct to the monitor to see if it lights up? If it does, can I replace the monitor's blue plug with a 3 pin plug and plug it into my six way surge protector?
If it doesn't light up, I think I will need a new monitor. ???

the power for your monitor doesn't come through the 15 pin blue connector. The power comes through either a kettle lead (the same as the tower) or a power supply like you would have on a laptop. The blue lead is just the signal. (or white or hdmi on newer stuff)
If you plug the power lead in without the blue lead you will usually get a light on the front of the monitor come on and it might say something like searching for signal or no signal on the screen but there are that many different types it's hard to say exactly.

Hi,
Many thanks for your interest. Problem now sorted,
The telephone engineer who installed our fibre option land line put it right, not exactly sure how.

Just out of interest - was the thin lead the audio/sound cable?
