in the 80's I had a ford escort, maxicom 4e a whip antenna and thought I was the biz!
then I went up to a harrier cbx 50w linear amplifier, center load antenna on a gutter mount and would hit newhaven at 30+ from boxhill surrey.
last month I went off roading with a group, and was using whats app as comms to the lead car, very difficult to do with £400 of flimsy tablet and touch screen typing on a bumpy ride, so I bought my self another rig.
so from the brief encounters I have had so far.
before you set out as a group make sure you are all on the same channel and settings! say channel 4 old frequency.
shout down the line and make sure everyone has got their ears on.
squelch.... basicly this function reduces the amount of distant static you here, its a very annoying back ground noise too, as you are in convoy you should be able to turn it right down, you are only txing and rxing max 200 meters.
power, to explain I think the max output on a rig is about 4watt, so think of it this way you are in a room talking to a person on the other side at a set volume, some one stands between you both and speaks randomly at the same volume it causes problems.
now in convoy this should not be a problem as you are normally far to close to each other for this to affect you (interfer)
now linear amplifiers, (burners) are illegal (it used to be the DTI who would come and confiscate your rig in my day) but they give you the "shout" ability so when the chap in the middle (or using a stronger setup than legal) keys in you can use your boots!, however all you have achieved is the ability to shout over someone, the person who you are talking too must have the ability to do the same because they will not be able to talk over the other station, so it becomes a no win situation unless you set a group key phrase in which when the phrase is said, the group moves to another designated channel sign's in ( yes have another role call to make sure everyone is there) and you carry on.
so in my opinion a standard cb is ok for off roading, the frequencies have really gone down hill, swearing, idiots, pretend djs ect, but squelch down close range comms is good. anything further text messaging is good, or get some boots.
(I have uhf too, but not every one has them and my set is being re set to the civil ham settings from the low 100s)
