so I've applied for my shotgun and firearms licences and starting to plan for gun and ammo safes.
In the meantime can you buy ammo by mail order (when the time comes)?
Looking at probably a .22 rimfire or maybe a 5.56 CF for foxes and maybe a shotgun for everything else. It's only for vermin control (foxy is taking too many ducks and hens) so nothing fancy is required.

I will probably be upgrading my gun safe soon as I'm planning on another couple of rifles so need a bigger one. If you're in no rush you could have the old one for a bad price.

I'll bear that in mind. I've no idea how long it'll take to get vetted!

I'm a 'farmer' with "good reason" to own a couple of guns and land to shoot over so I'm pretty confident but you never know!

when you get your licences etc, make sure you apply for planning permission for a 4 mile gun range, with all the bells and whistles, if nothing else, simply to have some fun with your locals,

No I dont believe you can get ammo mail order it has to go registered firearms dealer to registered firearms dealer. Last I heard a couple of weeks ago it costs £30 for a special courier to move a tub of gunpowder!! Ridiculous! And that's on top of the £70 price tag for the powder. For the love of god though dont buy a Ruger 10/22 .22lr. Worst rifle I've ever owned and used in my life in 17 years of shooting. As a general rule of thumb if you buy American expect a useless trigger that will need changing or adjusting. Was the same story with both my Savage and Remington rifles

I'm surprised at that. I know at least 10 people who use 10/22s in various configurations, I use an SR22 myself, with no problems. Mine is a real nice gun to shoot and deadly accurate.

Years ago I had a courier working for me collect and deliver ammo but he had a shotgun certificate himself so there wasn't an issue.

As above just cartridges will drop off cartridges to your nearest drop off point or to your house.
Firearms you can only but amo for your calibre.
.22 sensible holding amount would be 500 and buy 300.
Personally i use .17hmr and 243.
Dont forget if you require sound mods they need to be ticketed, and try and get as much ground on your firearms (even if you have no intention of ever shooting on it but have permission) this will help, especially with center fire rifles.
I have over 5000 acres passed for my .17hmr and had an open license first time, although my 243 is closed ticket.
Aslo make friends with your firearms officer... tea and cake go a long way

As above just cartriges but they are a bit dear and you get to look around the gun shop if you collect.
Gun shopping is the only shopping i do otherwise i just fetch what i need and go home
Sound mod won't be a problem but as above will need to be on your ticket.
Center fire in some areas need a mentor to start with although i spoke to my firearms officer the other day and he was prepaired to for go the mentor if i done a dsc level 1 first
The best thing is to sit down with your firearms officer and have a chat. As it seems to depend on the police force your covered by as to the way your application is handled. And if your ground has not been shot over it may need clearing by your police force.
Good luck and happy days

Cheers guys.
It seems Police Scotland are pretty efficient. My referees are being/have been checked and I have my interview early next week.
The consensus is that, as with many Authorities, they only become the enemy if you treat them as such.
I really needed a shotgun the other night. It's a long and amusing story about mistaken chicken identity but essentially a neighbour's semi feral chickens escaped as they moved house and spent 2 weeks on the run until they found my house. One got clipped by a car and was injured but impossible to get near. I had to use my air rifle and was lucky to get a half decent head shot to disable it but had to reload, climb over 2 fences to finish it off which is far from ideal. A wee 20 gauge shotgun would have done the job quick and clean.
Roll on Monday, it will be an interesting meeting.

Had my interview yesterday and it went okay apart from the motoring offence which still gets taken out of context in a typical Police style (they seem to love to assume that motorists are as a bad as violent criminals) and the neighbour 'disputes' which worry them more and for very good reason.
She seemed totally happy about the cabinet and safe locations so I'm getting them fitted properly so when I get the call from the Police office telling me I'm getting the licence(s) I can confirm I've fitted the cabinets and I'll be sent the paperwork by return and I can go buy some guns.
I'm confident I'll get the shotguns but not quite so much on the rifle. Hey ho!

An update ...
Not only did I get the sgc and fac but I've just got a variation for a .22 semi-auto with moderator and now looking at an HK MP5 style .22,
either this one with the rails and fancy stock which a mate got last week and it looks and works a treat
or this one which is cheaper but will need the picatinny rails
There is an Uzi version as well which is highly amusing but not exactly scaleable nor practical.
I may just go for a Ruger 10/22 and spend a pile dressing it up ....

Local RFD has a nice 'deluxe' 10/22 with scope for £300 which has concentrated my mind.
I'm off to Warrington on business on Tuesday and will leave early to have time to spend time/money at McAvoys en route. I go by feel, if it feels right then (reliability issues aside) I know I'll be happy with it.
Still trying to decide what I want from a .22, light and easy to use, accurate and reliability (ie loading/ejection) but above all, fun. I like the look of the Tac .22s and have loads of experience shooting the real thing and if the HK .22 MP5 feel the same then I'm happy to spend the extra even tho £400 will buy a lot of ammo and accessories for the Ruger.
decisions decisions

Nice.
Just picked up my amended fac - done in under 24hrs!
I am edging toward the ruger at £300 (complete, s/h, with mod and sight) and spend the extra cash on dressing it up over the piece ... and ammo!
