Hi guys,

My 1895 SJ 410 seems to be getting hot.

I bought it a while back (6 weeks), didn't really drive it far, just home.

As a standard procedure replaced:

Thermostat
Plugs
Leads
Oil & Filter
Air Filter
Fuel filter

I also jammed a hose pipe in the cooling system, and flushed it through for about 5 minutes. So it's as fresh as it can be.

Tonight, first long (ish) drive since getting it. I drove it from Sittingbourne, over to Chatham where my workshop is (About 10 miles), and as I got to chatham, I noticed the temp gauge soaring.
Got to me garage, switched off, and let it cool down. It'd spewed all it's water out into the overflow, and then out onto the floor.

I had a lot of other bits to do, so I just filled the rad back up to drive it home this evening. Heaters on full whack, all the way home, it took about 4 miles to get up to temp, then after that, it was just a gradual climb until it was back up in the red. It didn't spew it's coolant this time, as I had the heaters on full. But I think, given enough time, it would have done.

Now the rad isn't all full of mud, I've checked that, and also washed it off.
Cooling system is full of fresh water (no antifreeze yet though)
No leaks in the system. 'Stat is brand new.
I just don't know what else it could be.

If it was head gasket, I'd of thought it would have pressurized a lot quicker than 20 mins of driving.

Any ideas?

Ta

Put in Antifreeze to the correct ratio, it is also a Summer Coolant and Rust Inhibitor and has a different Boiling point from H20 in a Pressurised System.

So get the bleeding done properly, which will require the coolant up to temp,
get the hot air/Steam out, and see what temp you are running then.
*Do not overfill, and let the system cool back down without opening caps of topping up untill cold again.*

It should be cooler than straight water/H20 with Antifreeze in.

Before doing any of the above, maybe best Pressure Test the system since you appear to think there is a problem.

You replaced lots already,
might as well get a new Radiator Cap.

When the engine is running squeeze the top hose - you should be able to squeeze it together, if it's rock hard you have a head/head gasket problem.

Good couple of replies there. Cheers chaps.

I'm off to my local parts factor in a minute, so will get a replacement cap, and then nip into work to bleed the system through with some antifreeze and try again.

This morning, I got a new rad cap, 2L of blue antifreeze/coolant, and flushed the system out. Bled it up, and ran it.
The SJ got me about 10 miles, then soared into the red. So I let it cool down for 10 mins.
Then it got me another couple of miles before doing it again.
I must of stopped 4 times before getting to my destination.

Once I got into town, I let it cool right down as I went shopping with the Mrs.
Came back to it a few hours later. Started straight up, and got me about 4 miles, then it over heated.
I managed to limp it to a garage, sprayed the rad with water to cool it down enough to remove the cap.
Level was about right, it hadn't used any water, just spewed it out into the expansion tank.

I'm supposed to be taking it to a pre-arranged pay-and-play at my friends farm tomorrow (34 acres), so as a last resort, I bought some Holts WondarWeld. Stuck it in, topped up, and ran it. But it didn't even make it back to my house from the garage, which is not even 2 miles.

So there we have it. The little SJ clearly has a serious problem. Boo! Sad

Dont think it's W/P, as the whole system is hot, top hose, bottom hose, all of the rad, and even the matrix inside the cab.
I've a feeling it's a head / head gasket problem.
Shitter.

Okay, Picking up a 413 tomorrow.
BUT, I'd like to run the 410 gearing (Heard this is a good mod?)

What's easier. Fitting the 413 engine and box into my SJ410. or changing the Tbox and axles from one to the other?

Definitely swapping the 410 tbox and diffs into the 413 as the engine mounts are different. 413's have bigger C.V.'s so would pay to swap them into the 410 diffs.

I think you need to bite the bullet and consider whether the water pump is circulating the coolant efficiently and also whether the radiator is able to do the same. I don't have my 410 anymore but I experienced a period of overheating - I knew it wasn't the head gasket so I bought a new radiator which solved the problem. The tubes in the rad are fairly small bore and over the years they reduce due to corrosion and a build up of mineral deposits. See if you can borrow one to test it out.

Have you got the standard fan on it?
Not 100% if the 410 does, but the 413 fan has a viscous (heat operated) clutch.
This is supposed to lock as the clutch part warms from the engine, locking the fan at full speed. If the clutch goes the fan may only be spinning at half speed

Run the engine til its warm/hot, then turn it off and see if you can turn the fan by hand. If you can turn it just as easily as when cold, I would look at replacing the fan (with an electric one) Wink

It's a solid fixed fan on the 410. And a poxy little fan at that too.

Big plans for the SJ anyhoo, engine is currently out, and scrapped. Got a Sami engine on a stand, ready to be stripped, and rebuilt.
Got a Sami box and flywheel ready to go in, along with my 410 transfer box, and a disc converted rear beam.

Once things start moving will post some photos.

Ahhh shame you don't have a vit 8v engine, as they are pretty much identical to fit to a sami engine Smile

have you fired it up with rad cap off and and warm to see if pump is pumping? I had a 410 that had really blocked up cores inside the rad, when it got hot you could feel cold spots over half the rad where water wasn't getting to. took top of rad off and rodded all the cores out and was good as new
