Hi. Please can you help with a diesel problem. I have a series 3 landrover/santana, which blows out light grey smoke on starting and also when in gear but de accelerating down hill. The landrover is a 1982 model and probably has the original engine in it. Where do I start to look first?
Diesel pump, Injectors, Heater plugs?

Sounds like the timing is retarded a tad.
It is possible for the timing chain to stretch slightly, causing the timing to be out.
What is the mileage?

Valve stem seals? if it has an inlet manifold flap thingy for the brakes, it may have the same effect as on a petrol engine? My Pinto van engine used to be bad for it before we serviced the head.
