Hi all,

As you may of read in the Team Chaos section I am entered in the Macmillan 4x4 UK Challenge.
Every year we use os maps to navigate however this year we think we would like to do what most of the other teams do and use gps.
Do any of you know if there is a way of entering six digit os coordinates onto a device where you can also see exactly where you are and it will navigate between the points .off road as well as onroad. Thing is I can't afford to spend too much.

Thank you
c on

When you say "navigate off-road" to you mean for the device to find a route for you or merely show the direction?

Pretty much any handheld GPS (not SatNav) will accept OS coordinates. Garmin or Magellan, you takes your pick. It's personal choice really. I'm a Garmin man through and through but it is preference. I like the Garmin software and interface, I'm used to it. I've had them since the mid 90's.

I don't think there's an off the road sat nav as such. Not one that will tell you guide you turn by turn anyway.

BTW, you can search co-ordinates in Viewranger too.

Hmm food for thought there. I was looking for something where you could enter 6 digits from os but I dont think that is possible.
Viewranger looks interesting.

Alot of the Garmin sat navs allow you to create your own routes and save them to the device. They support GPX files.

You can also use coordinates.

6 digits? No problem! Click on the down arrow (next to 10 digit, above) and you get this:

The other thing that puts Viewranger above the other options is Buddy Beacon. It's transmits your location every X minutes, so you can be followed online. Useful for something like the McMillan.

Here's a laning trip i did.

Here is an update.

I have been in touch with Viewranger and they have sponsored us by providing mapping for the whole of the UK. Not only the but they have asked for a blog and will assist us in promoting our fundraising.
How fantastic is that???

Thank you so much for suggesting them ukjeeper it is exactly what we need.

Best wishes and thank you

Colin

Not sure I trust windscreen mounts that much but dont want loads of vibration either. Suggestions more than welcome. Very Happy

I have to admit this Viewranger is awesome. I now have the mapping for the whole of of the UK. It just seems perfect and I can highly recommend it to all.
I have just been on the phone with them and they are going to be compiling ablog on Team Chaos and our fundraising efforts etc.
A very good system and the people are nice as well, just what is needed Very Happy

Viewranger does do the Open Cycle maps (Free), so maybe try those first. If she likes that, shell out for the local OS maps.

So far downloaded the app, shall be downloading the OS 1:50,000 within the next couple of weeks - the cost of them is around £35 cheaper than Memory map - and I don't have to use windows to view it

Definitely a win win
