I think that I am in the market for a number 1 injector on my WJ 3.1TD, what do you guys think?
I struggle to get 3000RPM under load but out of gear it revs up to 3700RPM.
It accelerates well up to 2800RMP and will slowly reach 3000RPM. It will happily cruise at motorway speeds but struggles on those long hills.
The fuel & air filters have been changed and there is no smoke from the exhaust. Oil level and pressure are good. The MAP sensor is recent and there are no warning lights on. Fuel consumption is normal.
I have carried out a resistance check at the wiring for the injector and find it open circuit, (hence my opening comment) I also checked for voltage at the plug and there is almost battery voltage (ignition on).
I have a couple of questions that someone maybe able to help with,
From what I read, when this circuit fails the vehicle goes into Limp Home and the revs are normally restricted to about 2000RPM, is this correct?
Does anyone know if this electrical sensor can be refurbished/replaced?

had the same problem with my 2.5 Cherokee ......injectors fooobahhhed ....I bought a used one from a breakers ,swapped it over ,instant cure the needle movement sensors not repairable , check the wiring between the injector and plug for a break (open circuit) other wise bin it

I have read other forums and have seen a couple of times a reference to this injector being refurbished but I guess it must mean the nozzle and spring and not the needle sensor!
I suspect that the Limp Home revs of 2000RPM may refer to the four-cylinder engine
and the five cylinder has a different Limp Home RPM to allow for a heavier vehicle.

I have located a second hand injector; the resistance across the plug is 50 Ohms, is this acceptable?

I’ve got hold of an injector and I am now waiting for the arrival of a suitable socket.
I have noticed one thing though, it appears that somewhere around 1998 the pop off pressures of the Bosch VM diesel injectors changed, before 1998 the pressure was rated at 150 bar and the later ones are rated at 165 bar.
I may be wrong here but it seems to me that these should not be mixed even if there is an over lap in the pressures. If you allow say plus or minus 10 bar then there would be an overlap but no guarantee that the injector is working in that range.
I suspect that if an earlier one was fitted to a late engine then it would inject too early (premature injection!) and if a late one was fitted to the early engine, then it may inject late if at all! This would effectively alter the timing of the injection on the cylinder.
Is there a diesel expert out there who can confirm my thoughts?

the correct injector with the right opening pressure for your vehicle has got to be fitted ,the needle movement sensor is used by the engine ecu to correctly time your engines injection timing through the RPM range . The absence of signal from the sensor sets the engine ECU at a default setting which allows the engine to run safely (limp home) Which if you think about it ,it then runs if the timing was out on other engines ......SIMPLES

The second hand injector had arrived and I checked the resistance, 6500ohms! A bit different from the 50ohms that they told me! A second check got a reading of 9000ohms, bu66er; has my meter given up the ghost? so I took a third reading and got something in between. I phoned the breakers yard who insisted that the injector was tried and tested and was ok. We agreed to differ and I suggested that I would fit it but expected a problem, after all my existing needle sensor was open circuit; at least this one has resistance even if it was miles out from the range that has been suggested on various forums.
Unable to borrow a socket I ordered a Sealy one, well the correct packet arrived with a Draper Expert 27mm socket in it! A couple of e-mails later the correct one arrived on an over night courier. Injector fitted.
There was a notable improvement in the way the engine ran but every now and again it lost power on those long motorway hills. The breakers yard had said that they would exchange it when they got another one in but maintained that they could not fault it when they tested it.
I paid a visit to a Jeep specialist who plugged in his diagnostic tester and confirmed that a current fault existed with the needle sensor. I got a full refund from the breakers.
So to avoid any more hassle, I bit the bullet and fitted a new one, job done!
My Jeep is back to its old self and is once again a pleasure to drive.
And we all lived happy ever after (fingers crossed).

Only if you are sitting down and have a suitable drink at hand!
I was quoted £370 plus vat and paid £330 plus vat (JNL engineering). Still after all the hassle I had!!!!!

fell over backwards !! cheaper to get on ebay an buy another "spares or repairs" jeep saying that mines just gone and foobahed number 3 big end up
