Bit of a question for the testers on here. Is it legal to drill wishbones to take a few bolts? I was told welding repairs are not passable however my wishbones are in good condition and id like to keep them that way by bolting on some heavy gauge plate underneath to protect them from rock damage. Same principle as a diff guard.

why wouldnt a good quality welded wishbone be passable?
calmini is welded on the vitaras, as is the standard wishbone thinking about it at the top and bottom..
1. i doubt the tester would even notice
2. its not a repair its an addition of protection
3. if its not making it unsafe, sharp, or weaker there should not be a problem
what vehicle would this be on?

Drilling will weaken any component, by just how much depends on how much drilling there is plus where the drilling is and the size of the holes and how much material is removed. The effect is reasonable easy to calculate on a plain lump of metal but a lump of metal that has been designed to take certain stresses in a certain way is something totally different. Before you drill, are there any alternative ways of fixing the protection plates such as clamping.
