Evening All,

I trust you are well and ready for some snow plugging Smile

I am going to look at a grand vitara turbo diesel soon and am wondering how to tell the difference between the Peugeot RHZ and RHW engines and the Mazda RF one....

Research tells me I want the old Mazda RF lump for veg oil usage and general reliability but I have no clue how to identify this from a pug lump....

Engine/VIn numbers?

An obvious engine component difference?

Undecided as to auto or manual too.....

Cheers for any advice you can give.

Richard

The RF engine usually has 'RF' on the timing cover, the engine number will also start RF.

The mazda lump was a reliable engine, well mine was anyway til some wvo done for my fuel pump & due to the rarity a 2nd hand one was gonna cost me +£250. I remember seeing alot of spares/repairs then with most being cylinder head problems. Good & bad with all motors but much easier to get spares for the HDI, I can get a full engine for £150....what I'm driving now & much prefer it TBH

So you feel the newer Pug engines are just as good and reliable?

I am after an oil burner 4x4 with reliability and the MPG of the vitara 30+ which so far as i can tell is rare as rocking horse do do in 4x4's within my 2k budget...

Replacing a thirsty import forester as I miss the odd green laning and pay and play days...

I prefer the HDI to the older one, sticking with these now. I figure I get 35ish round the doors & 40 on a run which is decent. Only downside being the tax which is £260 a year. Spares for the older model would put me off getting another. For £2k you could do your own conversion, my 1.5 pug conversion was getting well over 40mpg round the doors but lacked power. Didn't get to really test it as it was stolen. I've still got another engine plus vitara bellhousing already modified & once I have some spare cash to buy an old vit or sj
