as the title says really!! I did have all this written out nicely until I hit the wrong tab and closed it and lost everything!!!
basically its a jimny shell on a shortened RRC chassis!!
Spent 3 hours on it today, my first day of the build, wont prob do anymore til the New Year and after ive sourced some bits that are missing. ie the auto box cooling system I think, and the oil cooler. Also the loom has been cut where it goes thru the baulk head to the ECU, so I have no ECU plug!! If anyone can help on these bits itd be greatly appreciated!! I will post in the Landy section too.
I just intended to remove the tank and cut the rear over hang off today, but in the end I had it shortened down to 90", a tad longer than the Jimny.
This is only a build thread, so I can share with you guys what i'm up to, and to get input from you
Please don't turn into a bunch of nasty folk tryin to slate it like a lot of people did Kevs orange jimny v8, about insurance, ministry checks etc etc, that has nothing to do with my build
Anyway, I'm getting the jimny shell home sunday, but these are pics as far as I am today, with just 3 hours work

Heres the Jimny I'll be collecting
so far, my build total is £600
if anyone has any of the parts I need, please get in touch.
Dave

yes mate, that's the first thing I said above the jimny pics
will use a bit of the chassis I cut out and weld that over the top.
I started on the shortening today and then thought ******....I cant leave it on my drive til the new year, so had to weld it up. its strong, but its only like that to move it around the yard
I cant see me getting anymore weekends in til then as ive got every weekend planned out.....well, the mrs has and I only have a standard size garage
roll on the lighter evenings too

90" will give you chance to knob around with rear articulation. I'm at 87", which is a standard Landy series rear prop. It has quite a lot to do! There were 80" ones built, but that is a very short, hard working rear prop shaft.
Good chassis you have there as well
We've enjoyed thrashing a V8 rangy chassis about the place for 20 years now. Gotta' love that roar!

cheers for the nice words buddy!!
can you give me any ides for the rear suspension?? never had much to do with landys. I put 200tdi axles on one sj I had but never completely completed it haha.
I have a big, what looks like shock??? on top of the a frame, whats that??
I've heard of cutting off one of the mounts on the front axle for the hockey stick, to give better front articulation, that's bout it!! haha but ive not really looked much!! would be good to get done without a body on

There were two ecu systems, flapper and hot wire. Yours is probably hot wire. If I were you I would dump it and megasquirt rather than trying to reconnect it all. If you do keep it there are really good manuals on lr4x4 for the electronics.
The big shocker thing in the middle of the rear axle is a levelling device. As you drive it's supposed to keep the back end level regardless of load. You can dump it for an off-road only vehicle.

Rear Axel; The rear top ball flexes quite a long way. So with Xeng ball ended radius arms and longer shocks, the back end can be made to flex a long way. But even with the standard parts I run, it flexes a lot with longer and weaker springs. Not a clue what rating those would be in this build though? The lightest you could get probably? I'd maybe be looking at fitting springs off something else later in the build....
If you ditch the top ball and put two links on the top, it'll twist a really long way

Al, thank you for your input, much appreciated. Is mega squirt not mega expensive??? It could be an option, a lad at work recommended that also!!
Teamidris, thank you also! I was looking at the x-eng joints for my derv build on landy axles
and ansleigh..................I was only reading your build the other day why you give up on it??? and I don't suppose you know where I can get any loom bits from??
I think ive sussed the oil/auto box cooler situation......does the rad not hold the coolers as well as the rad??
cheers
Dave

The engine oil cooler might be in the header tank of the rad, but the auto cooler is separate and in front of the rad (on some landy products). I'm chucking some guessing into this.
If the oil cooler is in the rad, it is described more as an 'oil conditioner', as it will cool or heat the oil to roughly the same temp regardless of the air passing over the sump. Unless the thermostat is shut? Which probably explains why the Td5 has the oil cooler in the side of the engine block

Megasquirt is expensive, I did mine for about £400 but if you buy a kit your looking at over £1000 however it gives you complete flexibility. Plus my engine will sit idling submerged like a diesel will. You can do a lot to improve the standard system but I never got mine as good as that.
You have to enjoy electronics and tinkering off the laptop though.
That said I do know someone selling a 3.9 serpentine engine with megasquirt fitted. It's still in the car so you can see it running and take it out so that you know how to put it back. They want less than a new kit for the whole lot.

Ran out of time, and as i didn't have space to keep it inside it was going rusty as quickly as i could work on it, by the time i'd finished it i would have needed to start welding all the rust up! painting it all would have stopped it rusting as quick but would meen everything i did to it would take longer as would need to grind paint of first then re-paint after, which wouldn't have helped with the time thing!

Not much of an update really, no pictures, just got a wiring loom, and an airflow meter, and i kinda got angry today and kicked the cr@p outta the jimny (ive got a temper like a 5 yr old)
Its mainly cos i do everything myself, on my driveway, and my gravel/soggy mud yard, and this time of year its horrible, and with the weight of the jimny, tryin to engine crane it up, then chock out with tyres, the crane again, it takes an age to get anywhere!!
So my mrs came out, gave me a telling off.....so i cut the jimny up haha.
well, ive started to trayback it as it wont ever be road going, might tube all the front too, will see how it goes. Least ive halved the weight issue and can move it around easier now!! haha
just need to find a good solution to closing the rear off again. i have the rear door, and rear corners, but everythin is like triple skinned and is really hard to cut straight
will try tack some bits in place tomorrow.
if anyone else has done a jimny trayback, please show some pics, ill ask in the suzuki section too
thanks for reading
Dave

You might want to consider relocating the steering wheel. You'll wear out your trousers pretty quick with that seat.
