Congratulations to Hull for being awarded the City of Culture title.
There will be city wide displays and tours arranged for those interested for:
Examples of Chav Culture
Examples and advantages of the cities Benefits Culture
Displays and demonstrations of car crime and the advantages it provides for the local population.
Mr Tyre is now looking for an alternative place to live as the city is now "too highbrow for the likes of me"

Hull to be the 'UK City of Culture 2017',
not 'European City of Culture 2017' the 'European Capital of Culture 2017' has not yet chosen.
No idea why Dundee City of Discovery and before them Aberdeen where
trying for 'UK City of Culture 2017',
when after the 2014 Independence Referendum
and then by 2015 possibly, they would not be a City in the UK.
& yet 'they' say that that never entered in considerations.
All the best to Hull, and shame on you Dundee for wasting more money than usual,
but since they were ready to blow 25 Million, & say it will create 1000 jobs, they might as well have Scottish City of Culture 2017 and get on with all they planned.
Even if there is not an Independent Scotland.

Hi,
City of Culture? Probably a way for some people to get rich, and all the other people to pay for it.
Swansea Bay did not win ... but then, therteis no sduch cvity as "Swansea Bay"
Culture is the way people live, not Art, Music, Literature ... although those who consider thjemselves to be cultured may indulge in such practices.

It gives a whole new meaning to the saying "Go to Hull, sorry Hell"!
The last time I was in Hull there were grey telephone boxes and the locals proudly stated that they had on only independant phone company in the UK - but that was yonks before BT was privatised. Also, if I remember correctly, Hull had a lot a women who were up for a bit of "sport" - well a lot of sport really!

Still have the white phone boxes, the phone network is owned by Kingston communications instead of BT who operate the rest of the country.

It Hull still has phone boxes it definitely can't be a BT operated network as BT seems to have removed the majority of their public phone box network across the country

They scoffed when Glasgow was made European City of Culture in 1990 (the 6th) led by Edinburgh. Considering the large number of museums and art galleries (all free, please note) it was not really a surprise to us Weegies.
I've only been to Hull once, well when I say been to I really mean through!
All the best Hull, anything that gives people a sense of community pride is good IMO.

But it was 'Glasgow' 'European Capital of Culture' 1990, the real McCoy.
A European Gravy Train/Drain.
'UK City of Culture 2017'
just another UK Gravy Train set of Events, not the same thing.
'UK City of Culture 2013 is Derry-Londonderry', Nice for them.

It was said the radio today that it isn't clear whether a city is chosen because it has or needs culture...

Good luck to any City who manages to get the award , I know the improvements it,s made to Liverpool , not to mention the fiscal gains,
The money is there for whatever City wins , spent wisely or not it will be a boost ,and may even improve beyond expectations ,
Time will tell , I wish the City well and hope to visit in the future . JP.

Yes but again Liverpool was a 'European Capital of Culture', Big Deal.
money came from Europe to help thing along for the year.
Once Liverpool put in money to win getting it that year.
'UK City of Culture', the Cities that never won have paid out lots
to not get it, Their Communities money,
& now Hull have to spend millions more.
Unlikely to benefit in the ways that Liverpool or Glasgow did.

And glasgows still a horrendous city. It won the award for the same reasons hull did.
Inject money.
Ah well. Hull yeah, lovely, great aquarium, lovely people. Just keep looking the other way.
Oh Kingston have their own phone boxes they've very little connection with bt (ok I'm probably a few years out of date if anyone disagrees).
Oh and if anyone from glasgow thinks I'm dissing your great city, yes I am, look around at the hundreds of acres of waste land around the centre.

Not to defend Glasgow, it does not really need defending.
but i do struggle to think where you are seeing 'hundred of acres of waste land around the Centre'. Especially with the value of land around the Centre of Glasgow.
(I take it you are looking at Land that needs Cleaned up after decades of Heavy Industrial use.)

Any land with Contamination issues is a different matter, from land awaiting Development
but i think that is covered in the article above.
Anyway, Glasgow has its Hundreds of Millions been spent to host the Commonwealth Games next year, and it is what it is,
It is run by officials that are just as corrupt as ever.
& after the games nothing much will be different,
just the Hotels and people with Accommodation to rent out will have raked
more money in.

It does have Venues new and old and cultural events for anyone that wants
to frequent them.

Take a walk into the city centre by foot from pretty much any of the eastern directions.
Once you get past the west end of the city back into the east end of Clydebank, the same again.
Hundreds of acres of derelict waste land. This isn't land miles away from the city centre, this is within a 15 minute walk. Prime business land. Have a scroll round with google maps and you can see it all. I agree that inside the city centre land prices are high (that hotel that's being built next to the train station, a prime example (and must really be ******* off the hotel next door)). But outside the centre, na.
How did Glasgow manage to build so many new buildings and venues right next to the centre for the commonwealth games? Because there's that much land being unused with crumbling empty factories sitting on the sites.
The problem with the use of land around Glasgow is that it's a sprawling city with a low population (compared to cities of the same size south of the border). The Glasgow urban sprawl has the same physical footprint as Greater Manchester / Oldham. The Greater Manchester sprawl has the population of Scotland, Glasgow is closer in population to Sheffield.
This means that Glasgow has never had the physical restraints of other similar cities (Edinburgh is surrounded on three sides by geography as example), so being able to move to 'clean' land for building and not having to bother with the demolition side has been a simpler and cheaper option.

Interesting.
Google Maps are interesting, knowing the land and the City is rather better IMO.
Luckily i know nothing about Cities in England, i just pass through them and have no real interest in them so can not comment.
Are they Pretty & friendly?
London has a population of 8.3 million,
Scotland has a total population of getting on for 5.3 million.
Greater Manchester is around 2.7 Million population and growing, (Reading Wiki) not growing that fast though.
Sheffield & the City of Glasgow do seem to be about the same at around 600,000, & then Double that for the Greater Glasgow area.
Sheffield City Region getting on for 2 Million.
Scotland largest city & the UK's 3rd largest is Glasgow it says.
http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow
*Quite possible Out of Date and Inaccurate, but then thats Wiki.*
Have you noticed that Edinburgh has the Forth in front the hills to the South, Penicuik is Expanding as is every place else around the ESk & Midlothian.
Then Musselburgh etc to the East, hundreds of new houses going up there.
Extended Edinburgh now going all the way out to east towards North Berwick really,
where they get away with building and has no constraints,
Unlike near South Queensferry and Westwards where Scotland Richest man & biggest land owner had stopped more building sprawl happening for decades,
but now as the Bings go and already another new town gets built, nothing stops Edinburgh going all the way West to meet Glasgow.
New Forth crossing soon and expansion will be picking up a pace.

Hi,
If nobody else wants that derelict land, I'll have it.
But that would mean that one day, a Civil Servant will not be able to boast that he sold it.

Not sure if you're agreeing with me or not
With regards to the population of Greater Manchester, yup, around 3M, but if you include the urban sprawl of Oldham and the other outlying towns it soon increases to around 5M, fag packet maths, but I'm sure you get where I'm coming from with regards to the density of population in Glasgow. Also, completely agree with the geographical features which limit the expansion of Edinburgh, it's not going to be long at all till Livingstone, heart hill, and then bellshill morph together.
Heh, if all the people who have promised to move back to Scotland after Sept next year do, they'll probably need the housing.
As for cities down south being pretty and friendly, I've a soft spot for Sheffield, so in that regard, I'd say yes. For most of the others I can't comment.
Wasn't aware that Edinburgh was expanding that fast down the coast, I've not taken the A1 south around Berwick in years.

' the most heavily indebted area was Hull ......'
Well lets hope spending Millions to win UK City of Culture 2017,
and then millions more running the Year,
brings in Money for Hull and its people.
Waiting 3 years to find benefit from the event will hardly help feed the needy now though.
