|
|
|
Hi all, I was a member on here a few years back with a Suzuki, I lost interest and sold the car, now I'm back with the car a really always wanted. This is probably the first of many questions I'll have and any help will be very much appreciated.
I'm trying to confirm what I need to buy to get lower gearing to suit my 33" tyres, it is 307 now with d30 front and d44. Can't afford to spend a fortune so here goes, I have a low ratio 44 so can just change the ring gear and pinion to 373, that's the lowest it will go I believe without changing the case? For the front as far as I can tell I can only fit a 354 in my case? So my best bet is an early Cherokee 2.5 axle (411) and change the ratio to 373.
Does all this seem right and the cheaspest method, or am I missing something?
Thanks

All makes some sense but really you need lower ( 4.56 ) to run 33's properly...
I can do you the ring & pinion sets, 2 x full bearing, shim, seal rebuild kits and 2 new carriers for less than £700.
Might sound a lot in one go but for all new diffs with new install kits at the correct ration it would probably be better than spending money on second hand bits that will still leave you tall on gearing...
David

I was under the impression my cases couldn't take that low a ratio? Or is that just what Dana recommend?

problem is carriers - not cases

Ah right, maybe that's me not interpreting the conversation right, I'll have a look at the exploded diagram again.

Just to fire another little question into the mix, does an LS after the AB in the diff part number mean LSD? I do have a factory fitted towbar hence the dyna 44 ( I think) in my newly acquired not looked after (sadly) jeep.

Check with lighthouse, but IIRC the 4.56 gears are quite a bit weaker than the 3.73's due to machining out the ring and pinion to get them to fit.
I used to run 3.73's with 33's on a 4.0 with no issues at all. No broken shafts, no smashes diffs...

So I have the high ratio carrier in my d44 (with LSD) I can only go to 3.73 as standard, I've checked on the diff changes and all I think I need is an 8.125mm crown wheel spacer (to take up the digference between the high and low ratio carriers) and I can fit any ratio I want, has anyone done this? I think the reason Spicer don't do it is additional weight, but if for example I made an aluminium spacer to take up the gap I could keep my LSD and not add to much weight to the diff assembly.

I'm currently running 33's with 4.88's in my 4.0. I changed the R&P's front and back from 3.07. I have a D30 and D35.
As noted somewhere higher up in the thread, it's the carrier not the casing that you need to change.
Offroad in the sand she is amazing. Nothing road legal round here can keep up and that includes Landcruisers and Patrols.
As for drivability, its pretty good and quite spitely off the line, although I have had quite a lot of engine tweeks done. It will at a push get to 75-80mph (not 100% sure as it's in Km and the speedo now reads wrong - will get the GPS out sometime) but doesn't like it. She will cruise at 65 tho.
