Hi lads,

In the process of my rebuild, I've struck trouble with a new clutch kit.

I went to fit it only to discover that the cover plate supplied, only has provision for two locating dowels, diametrically opposite, whereas my flywheel has THREE locating dowels, equidistant around the perimeter.

I've attempted to drill the two holes in the cover to line up, but of course the accuracy is questionable..!

On checking my order, it would appear that the part that arrived was to suit, series 1 & series 2.

Is there a difference between the series 2 & the series 2a..? I always thought they were the same.

Any ideas guys..?

Norm.

Hi Norm,
A quick search on the series 2 club forum has found this...

Quote:
Right. I'll say it again. Use the S3 driven (centre) plate, and the 1968 onwards 2a diesel cover (pressure) plate. Its a 9½ inch three dowel type which works with the 2a release. Trust me on this. I have one, and am using it on a 1984 90 2286D unit with the original flywheel still on the engine. (They stay with the engine, not the gearbox)

This was written by Silverspoon earlier this year.
It seems that many are drilling the plate to accomodate the dowels however the above would appear to work. Is your engine the correct engine for the year? A later series 3 one may have been fitted which will have the 3 dowel flywheel. Is it a petrol or diesel? Also is it definately a 2a gearbox? Ive just done the clutch on my late (1970) 2a petrol. It has two dowels and six bolt holes (the three finger type clutch).
HTH
Pete

G'Day Pete,

Thanks for the interest and your info.

O'Kay mate, this is the good oil....! It transpired that the flywheel is pre drilled by Rover, for different dowel patterns. Which allows for the option of either a 9" or 9 1/2" clutch plate. Three equidistant dowels allow the 9 1/2" clutch, and two diametrically opposite, allow the 9" plate. So all I have to do, is to remove two dowels and install a new one at 180 degrees and it is sorted..! The amazing thing to me is that new dowels were readily available ex-Melbourne at $6 each. So mate that's it, many thanks to you for your advice, ideas, and interest.

We heard that you guys are in for some weather, snow and all, I'm from Brum
but I've been out here for 40 odd years, and that's one thing I don't miss..!

Good luck Cobber,

Norm.
